Bad news for YouTube Channels

I’m speaking for myself here, but I think the limits placed on this site are done to maintain this as a saddle hunting site and not have it deteriorate to the point that new folks interested in saddle hunting can’t come here and learn about saddles, and more importantly saddle safety, without the vitriol. There’s other forums you are probably already members of if you want to bitch and raise hell about the emotional topics.
I suspect that the main reason politics is banned isn't because the don't want us to discuss it, it's most likely because they want us to maintain civility towards each other. Sometimes it's best to not know which side of the "aisle" someone resides.
But there are times when politics and bureaucrats are sticking their nose into our pursuits. Those are topics that might be appropriate for discussion on here, but we all know how threads morph. It's a tough call on where to draw the line.
So far, the mods have done a pretty good job to keep us on course. Thanks.

I get that, but the conversations you have in church aren’t the same conversations you have at the Legion hut. The conversations you have road tripping with a hunting buddy aren’t the same conversations you have road tripping with family or mixed company.

There’s a time and a place for everything, but the powers that be have deemed this to not be the place for politics or religion because nothing good comes of those discussion in the context of saddle hunting.

this site is great in part due to the moderator philosophy....i wouldn't change a thing

In terms of the no politics rule for this forum. I am in favor if for no other reason than to keep focus on the topic of interest (saddle hunting).

Another regional hunting forum I used to participate in had no such rule. It degenerated to the point that from just looking at the comment threads, you wouldn't even have known it was a hunting forum. I stopped frequenting that forum not because I was offended, but because it no longer served any purpose to me. I joined to be kept abreast of things like deadlines for park hunt applications in my state, not user X's opinion on every issue under the sun.

Regarding this particular topic, I will try tread lightly while still trying to respectfully share my thoughts. Mods please feel free to delete or edit any part of this post if I have crossed the threshold you believe appropriate.

YT is a private company (owned by Google). Google is very large and I think one could reasonably raise some monopolist concerns. However, while YT may be the largest video hosting/sharing platform, they are by no means the only one. If you dislike YT's practices, revenue structure for contributors, or anything else about them really, don't use or patronize them. Functionally speaking, vote with your dollars, attention, and web traffic for something else.

I 100% support freedom of speech, but not everywhere needs to be a platform. Kudos to the SH.com community (and mods) for keeping it civil and on-topic! This website is one of very few sites I'd let my young kids become a member of, learn from the community, and participate in the discussion. I think sites like YouTube are wrestling with the reality that parents nowadays are handing devices to a kid at age 1.5 and have no idea what they are watching.

If you want to talk politics, there are a billion other places on the internet to do it. If you want to talk about politics related to hunting, there are 100,000 other places to do it on the internet. ALL conversations involving politics spiral out of control at some point because no one ever agrees on everything. We are not going to be mediators of that. This site is about saddle hunting and that is what the content should be about.

You just summed up aldeer.com. you'd be hard pressed to find a conversation on there about Alabama deer hunting.

Is rumble the best alternative that is available to the hunting community?

Probably.

Theres anew outdoorsman sicial media site called GoWild that may be worth checking out.

If you want to make money off youtube vids...you gotta either get direct sponsorships or use it to promote your business. Unless you were a 1m+ subscriber channel you werent getting much money anyways. 8

I wasn't advocating that we open up the forum to politics.
But sometimes politics inserts itself into things that are very relevent to the things we enjoy on this forum. I have no problem resisting political conversations on this forum but I'm pretty certain that it will be harder to ignore in the "woke" world we live in.
Make no mistake, they are coming for our God given rights as defined in the US Constitution.
Who owns and controls the servers that Saddlehunter uses? What happens when they decide that we are too controversial and refuse to host us?

I get you and it’s all good, I’m just saying it’s a conscious decision to interject it into discussions, but the powers that be have asked us not to do that. Trust me, it takes an effort on my part at times, but I try and respect the site and keep it out.

It’s basically because there are many outlets to comment & discuss those topics. The threads typically devolve to taking sides & shots at each other which is the opposite of what we’re about. I’ve been on plenty of other forums that allow it & I prefer this…….
Y’all should have the slogan keep your shots at deer sides not party sides
Or something to that effect!

I agree with the leadership decision of this site and also wholeheartedly agree that the moderators do a superb job. I haven't had too many of my posts cut out completely. :tearsofjoy: I will say It is kind of "big brother-ish" when it does happen though I will admit that.

I completely understand the reasoning and logic behind this choice of no politics. And for the most part, I do agree. However, to reference other sites where you can have a voice and enter the fray.... to me, I do not enjoy nor do I go to those other sites. They just are not an option for me. Quite simply, I like this site!!! I truly enjoy the respect everyone demonstrates here. It is commendable and very unique in this day and age. Its something to behold and extremely important for us to continue to peer review and self regulate. For the record, I'm really not on any other site at all for the same reasons discussed above by other posters. I don't want to be around a dumpster fire any more than anybody else. Especially when I want to talk hunting and saddle hunting

BUT, I do get concerned or conflicted to some extent about real or perceived APATHY regarding these types of topics. I mean censorship is a direct assault on our First Amendment rights. Is this the forum to hash out political differences? Absolutely not; however, the subtle message that we will never "show our hand" so to speak concerns me about group think with issues surrounding important freedom related topics like censorship, suppression, and the sacrifice of individual freedoms and rights for the sake of appeasement. I don't ever want a youngster to think that these issues are not important to consider and discuss. I believe we (the SH.com) community that (probably for the most part) we all are quite civil and want to promote saddle hunting and hunting in general. Therefore, honest discussions that are meant to inform and educate about very real and very harsh "big government, big tech oligarch, big media oligarch overreach" type practices are important to isolate and provide a consensus of concern and opinion about. Kind of a " red flags about your freedoms that could impact you as a hunter and quite frankly as a US Citizen" type of issues.

I guess my take is that how this sit is and has been managed and moderated provides for me a more apt and highly reasonable and objective format for these types of issues in the right areas and at the right times with no personal attacks, swiping or sniping of any kind. I just believe because we appear to be very civil and all seem to honestly understand the importance of being "above the fray," we have an example here to model and to be a resource for issues of concern to all of us as American Citizens first, and hunters second. I'm done! Sorry for the lengthy and wordy diatribe.

Is it politics or is it controversy? IMO the particular controversy at hand is a business decision, not ”politics”. Publicly traded companies do what they have to do to produce more revenue, that’s pretty universal. Social issues may play into decisions, but again, ultimately in the end it, it‘s about the bottom line, either short term or long term. I agree, I don’t think politics should be tolerated, but I don’t think the site should shy from controversy. And I don’t think it does, I think it shys away from topics that bring out the worst in some people. Everyone gets to have an opinion, and everyone should respect someone else’s opinion, without personal attacks. You can debate an issue civilly without stooping to personal attacks, but it does require thought and some don’t seem to have the time or inclination.. I feel the Mods do a pretty good job of letting controversy run it’s course until people start acting like jackasses. But there’s always that one that can’t control themselves and the Mods don’t have time to play babysitter so they pull the plug. I don’t blame them.

^^^A most excellent post!
Usually, when a post is a longer one, there's eventually something that I get a little "off-ish" about, but not with that post @woodsdog2...nice job.

Im all for people keeping their political and religious views to themselves and just talk hunting

Props to the SH members tho, cuz overall they do a good job of staying civil when giving opinions and debating issues
