Best type of ropes for tree tether and linemans

I am not a rock climber, just a hunter who has two young saddle hunters. MAN this is a lot.

Got my fingers caught under my lineman's on a fall once and MAN it hurt. So I was moving to dynamic on my lineman's and my tether, from reading all the above I think im good on my tether. but now i am confused on my lineman's.

either way im gonna smack the tree so im hurt there (been there done that) but with the static rope I can more easily swing my lineman's up the tree and not feel like i need to drag it with my hands if you know what i mean. But if i fall i could get umm shock damage?

is there a dynamic rope out there that isnt so floppy that i would be able to use in a similar way to the static rope?

So many rope choices but I was specifically looking at static. I would never one stick and use wild edge steps when im alone and 4 sticks with aiders when im with my kids.

thanks,
I don't understand the difference dynamic rope would make at such short lengths. I know Canyon c-iv ha@ some stretch to it, is 9mm and quite stiff for its size. It makes great tethers. Idk about for LB as I never use them, they're useless and dangerous to me.
Its cool you're doing saddle hunting with you kids! I can only hope to get my daughter into it some day!

We are talking about 18 inches of slack ..im not a machanic but thats like 2000ths of an inch of give..we are not bungie jumping off bridges.i mean unless you are an obsessed one sticker who tries to squeeze every thousandth of an inch out of his leepfrog since its just to hard to move up once more.or something.

I dont even know what redundancy is .Im a roofer i dont fall.period.and if you fall you are fired before you hit the ground.period.its my job to designate compitant people and im telling you now if you dépend on your gear to save your life and not yourself... soulfully .....you are not compitant....sorry...get a pac seat ,bucket or ground blind.theres always fishing.but you aint climbin trees with me....or roofing.im guesing 50 petcent of treestand hunters should have no buisness climbing trees..i aint trying to be on one ,and i aint trying to be a jerk.im just saying out of love that every treestand hunter who ever fell should have hunted from the ground.thats obviouse.is it realy worth it to you or your family?its just a hobbie.

your right... Think I will just take the drive to REI and ask someone who is actually competent when it comes to ropes.

just wish it was closer...

Thanks, god willing you never has a accident on the roof. take care.

I agree with the length of rope we use dynamic won’t make a rat’s behind, but dang son. A little kids gloves sometimes might go a ways to helping the newbies not be afraid of asking a question. I’d venture to say most of us hunting from a saddle are NEW to it. I’m going on my 3rd season, but I consider myself a newbie too. Now I KNOW I ain’t gonna fall, but I gotta lot to learn still. This a hobby so let’s keep it fun! If it’s just dry at your place, come see me and I’ll put a smile on your face, grouchy!

thanks,

First off lemme congratulate you for reviving an old thread! F you start a new thread and ask a question that’s been asked before, someone just might bash you for that! Don’t sweat the folks that take for granted the unknown! Saddle hunting is a simple thing to do, but there is a lot to it! And you cannot afford to screw up or you’ll die or wish you had, possibly.
Learn to 1 stick, then rappel. You already have a stick you can use. Thank me later.
Your fingers should never have been underneath your lineman’s belt. Any rope, should flip up the backside of a tree easily as a lineman’s belt, especially after you were just leaning into it. Besides, It’s only touching half of the tree at any given time.
Your fingers should never be under your tether either, but that’s the one that some folks will get caught under. You could get stuck and have a super bad day. I recommend tether handles so you NEVER PUT YOUR FINGERS UNDER YOUR TETHER!
As far as the ropes go, most use a static rope and it doesn’t really matter so long as it is climbing rated along with everything else in the system you use. When shopping read the descriptions and a stiffer rope may be easier to use for a tether……It’s all personal preference after that.

As a saddle hunter and one time rock climber let me offer some thoughts. Dynamic rope will always make a difference in a fall. Even when short. Yes a short rope has less stretch since it is a percentage but you also have less time to accelerate in your fall. That is how these ropes are designed and work. If you are going to rappel do not get a dynamic rope. They are not made for rappelling. Keep slack out. Like others have said fall prevention not fall arrest.

Why was your finger under your lineman’s rope?

Welcome to the 2TC club! Be sure to check out new innovations and ideas on the gazillion 2TC threads! Ideas have been tested, tried and modified. I'm only saying this because that video is so old, but Scott is the 2TC OG!
His post was from early 21… that might have been a more up to date video back then lol

The 18” of slack would generate nearly 6” of stretch in a dynamic rope since the stretch is around 30% but when that rope stretches, some of the couple foot of rope wrapped around the tree will stretch as well. Dynamic rope will generate less force plain and simple BUT like you said, if we keep our ability to fall to an absolute minimum (less than 18”) then the force won’t be as significant. I personally won’t use dynamic rope because it’s not as abrasion resistant and also because I don’t to sink down an extra 3 inches when I sit into my tether

be sure to ask Becky at REI she knows everything about rock climbing, ropes and saddle hunting. Becky is definitely smarter than us all:sweatsmile:

I love whene my brother corrects my math.i was way off.still cant figyer out why we as saddle hunters would want stretchy rope?and i cant fire you.to important to the crue.

homie just jumps right in...does he need more redundancy,or dynamic rope.maybe cobra buckles on the legstrap or waist belt.or grade 8 steel..oh i know.. a back up tether.then he wont die like he did.

Seems to be some serious disagreement on this topic. After speaking with the owner of Screamers fall arresting devices, I just add a Screamer Shorty in between my bridge and tether. The owner of Screamers said that even if it does not fully deploy it will lessen the shock to a safe degree. He said he has sold many to saddle hunters that are concerned about possible injury from a fall. It also will not deploy when you just hang, swing or bounce slightly. This is just my experience and opinion.
