Christmas in July! Plan to up my ground game.

I've been good so Santa dropped off a brand-new Waldrop Pac Seat just now. Well, Fedex to be precise and I haven't really been all that good, lol. All joking aside, I have been wanting one of these for several years and so I finally broke down and ordered one a couple of weeks back. All the good reviews on here helped to seal the deal.

I didn't do as much ground hunting last season as I did the two prior seasons. During those seasons I had some really cool encounters and had deer very close to me. Quite a few of my post season scouting hot spots were areas not well suited to hunting elevated. For that reason, and due to the simplicity of the setups, I've been thinking a lot about throwing in a good bit of hunting off the ground this upcoming season. With this in mind, a good bit of my archery practice has been from seated positions. I especially like combining ground sits with traditional archery. They just really seem to go together to me.

Anyway, here it is, fresh out of the box. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
Is that the normal sized chair or shorter turkey chair? And curious why you went with whichever one that is. Been kicking the tires on one of these for a few years too.

I got the regular chair. I debated also about which one to get and ultimately decided on the full size. I'm happy with it. For turkey hunting, I like those really short turkey seats since I use a shotgun for turkeys. I can shoot both my compounds and a longbow out of those very short turkey chairs though.

Gotcha. Trying to get an idea of size from the photo. I would probably get that size too. If i turkey hunted i could see the shorty being good there. I have a short style bass pro special chair like that that I like a lot and have used for a couple ground setups for deer. I like it but don’t see how you can shoot a bow comfortably out of one. You got mad skills if you can do it in that short of a chair.

Here is the turkey chair I use. As you can see it is very low to the ground and I can really lean back. It is a good place to take a nap. I've shot quite a few turkeys and a buck out of it. The good thing about them is you can just jam them up in a low bush, sit down, and disappear.

I have 2 Mathews Heli M compounds and they are short axle to axle bows. I can get away with ground clearance by a little bit shooting them out of that turkey chair. For the longbow I cant the bow almost horizontal and lean over to get everything right. It works.

The Pac Seat about 12 inches wide and about 33 inches long and about 3 inches thick packed up. I don't have it in front of me to measure at the moment. These are ballpark numbers. What really struck me on first impressions is how light it is. It reminds me of one of those folding aluminum chairs with the strap seat material we had when I was a kid. It seems very well made. I sat in it and shifted around and did some shooting out of it and it is very nice and there was no squeaking in it at all.

Let me rephrase.....when u setting up to kill those deers in ur chair have u been in the wide open or up in some bushes or up against a tree...I big fan of hunting off the ground with my saddle. I'm begining to think that my local terrain is favorable to this and the rest of utes maybe not so much
Most have been in sweet corn only 2' high. You only need something as high as your head. I like having a tree behind me but not always available in a corn patch.

Oh yeah. Nice. Yeah that’s the same style chair I have. I can see how a short axel to axel and tilting the longbow would work there. Good info on the pac seat. I remember those chairs you’re talking about. The weight sounds like a very cool deal.

I cant my 64" Widow to shoot from my Pac Seat. It has worked very well. A wheel bow should be no problem at all.

I had mine out early this morning and did a little shooting out of it. I like it a lot. I need to go ahead and get it treated with permethrin. Thats one of the big concerns with hunting off the ground, for me, is mainly chiggers, but also ticks, early season. This might not be such a problem farther north but down here while it is hot, they are out in force.

I noted in one of Robert Carter's videos on YouTube he talks about putting down a garbage bag or something like that before he sits in the woods to hunt. He says he even puts it on a log before he sits down to take a break. I can see that. I may look into making some sort of ground cloth to put down that I can have heavily treated with permethrin.

Good idea, We have a lot of ticks where I hunt and a few chiggers and I am a big fan of Sawyers permethrin. I usually take a yoga mat to place chairs on and they are thin foam and I will be treating it. Thanks

I remember one time years ago when I got eaten up with chiggers. It was late November and I decided to rifle hunt out of a little box stand on the club we called the "red stand". It was just a small square box made of welded up steel pipe with a tin roof screwed down on top. It had some plywood for sides. The stand had a dirt floor and there was a rusty metal folding chair in there. Well, I spent the morning in that tiny box and didn't see anything, but that night I bet I didn't sleep a wink. I had so many chigger bites I looked like someone peppered me with birdshot. I was miserable for two weeks. I renamed that stand the "redbug stand".

Eat more garlic. ;)

Ha, I do eat a lot of garlic. I put in almost everything. It must attract mosquitos. They absolutely love me. Coffee and hot sauce apparently don't dissuade them either.

I have to say, and I am probably jinxing myself here, but the chiggers and ticks have not been bad at all here this summer. Usually, I will find a few ticks crawling around on my clothes after a scout trip but the last several times, nothing. I'm not complaining.

My last trip in the woods, the ticks were bad. Going to hang more cams this weekend and will respray everything tomorrow to get ready.

I think a lot of it has to do with how much rain we get or don't get that determines how bad they are. Last week I went through a bunch of head high grass crossing the end of a big slough and I was sure I would be covered up with lots of creepy crawlies but nope. My scouting clothes are sprayed down in a heavy dose of permethrin, and I usually put deet 40% anywhere they can crawl in or around.
