Consew 206 RB-4 acquired

It has been great so far. My only complaint is the presser feet height. It is alot hight than some of the other machines that I have tried to use but would be better higher. It has handled anything I have got under it though. 5 layers of webbing plus saddle fabric and grosgrain.
Took the clutch motor off and replaced with a servo motor. Very happy with the combination.

Sounds like it can make your saddles, which is good. But more height / power is always better.

I have a servo motor and needle positioner (reliable sewquiet 6000sm) in a box waiting for me to install. Everything is cleaned up and the clutch was taken off. I just need to wait until my son gets home to help me move the table into my home office.

The servo and needle positioner install will happen sometime this week.

I still cannot get over how heavy the machine is compared to my kenmore 158 machines. Totally different class of machine.

I do not have a needle positioned but my wife's home brother machine does and it is a very handy tool. Your right about the different class machines. Right tool for the job makes a huge difference.

Installed and tested the servo motor. The belt was a little short, but I got it running. Took the belt off. I’ll pick up a new and longer belt tomorrow.

After that, replace the grease, then onto the videos on setup.

Replaced the grease on the bottom joint. Top joint I could not find a way to unscrew the joint, so I squirted grease into what looks like a port for the joint. I kept squirting until the old brown grease came out, then the new grease started coming out. Did this while hand turning the machine.

Got frustrated trying to program the reliable servo motor. Documentation is not complete. Will give reliable a call tomorrow.

Also cleaned up the hook and underside. Finished with oil. Tried to replace a part on the tension mechanism, but got frustrated. I may just put I the whole tension component I bought.

Upper area. Also of note, those wicks were “fun” trying to get out back together.

Also went back to the seller. He had a bunch of new needles, about 3 more set of walking feet (cording feet and regular feet), sundry supplies and tools.

All in all, not a bad weekend. Making progress, slowly but surely.

Much more came home with me, but I figure one pic of stuff is enough.

Stay tuned for next week.

Well, I found the screws to remove the top gear box and ended up cleaning up and replacing with new grease.

I was afraid of losing the screws. I found a neat YouTube on how to magnetize screwdrivers. So simple. Just slide your screwdriver shank over strong magnet ( I used the bottom of my magnetic parts holder cup from harbor freight) from handle to tip multiple times and also rotate for multiple time until you get it all.

Finished cleaning up the underside.

Tomorrow I’ll replace the feed dog. It is pretty messed up. I received one from diamondneedle.com, but it is not an original. Does not look as nice as OEM.

I may just order an OEM. Only place I found was below

NC-6 is Seiko model that is same as earlier 206RB-4.
If you go to that machine, you can scroll to the part.

Then rewatch the 4 hours of maintenance videos and start tackling them.

No one ever accused me of being quick.

I am temporarily stuck at #13 out of #18 maintenance steps. According to the owner, it was never serviced. Just ran and oiled.
A couple steps I had to soak the parts with deep creep and let them sit and eventually get them unstuck. Now the same goes with the adjustment for the needle bar to presser foot timing.

And I ran out of deep creep and the hardware store is closed. I pick it back up tomorrow.

Getting closer. I can’t wait to get this machine in service.

Last “big” adjustment is the safety clutch. It is locked up and I can not get it free. I took it out of timing trying to get the safety clutch to release. I’ll just have to redo steps 1 through 12 once I get the safety clutch to free up.

Been squirting sea foam deep creep on it, still no joy. I ordered kroil penetrant/oil based on recommendation of sewing machine mechanic I spoke with at Collier Equipment.

Kroil is coming Monday. Hopefully I’ll get it freed up this week.

Everyone reading this, do yourself a favor, keep your machine oiled and throw down some stitches weekly, even if just to keep the machine moving.

Safety clutch is freed up and working. Went through the whole maintenance series a second time (sans checking reverse length against fwd., will do that after stitching. Looks close now. Will obsess over it later.). Needed to do that due to knocking it out of time.

Next is to set the bobbin and upper tensions for 69, 92 and 138. I may order some serabond thread to check that out.

Getting closer. Hope to only have a couple more posts until machine is completely ready for fabricating.

I think I will conclude my updates for this thread, unless anyone has questions, comments or concerns, then I will reply.

I have sgt knots 69 bonded nylon working with size 16 Schmetz needle. Adjusted the bobbin and upper tension and put some stitches down on old webbing.

I am going to get 69, 92 and 138 bonded poly and adjust tensions for those threads. I may obsess a little over reverse stitch length being exactly same as fwd length, but not until I get some more practice and experience running this machine.

Then last thing is for me to install the needle positioner. I want to use the machine without it for a while so I can appreciate it once I install it.

Then more practice and then onto fabricating. Thanks for reading and for your input.

It was an ordeal to get the needle positoner on and working. Had to eventually get a handwheel for an RB-5 to get the positioner to work.

Unfortunately, the reliable motor did not have enough torque to reliably get through multiple layers of poly webbing at low speed. It was hanging up at 2 layers. I shared some of same webbing with jhunter13 and his 750 watt Amazon or EBay servo motor did not have issues like my reliable.

I decided to try a below the table box style reducer. I got that working with power twist belt. Slowest speed is about 1 stitch per second. Way more torque at low speed. I can slowly, controllably and reliably stitch through 3/8” poly webbing (strapworks 6 layers) without any issues.

Now am completely done with the restoration of this machine. Now looking for a second one for more fun.

I was looking for a table for my 111w-155 when I can across a very clean 206rb-2 for $600 table, machine, servo. I’m very tempted. What do y’all think? @sojourner @jhunter13 @4090Sharps

My wife would kill me considering I have two machines at home but I would sell my 111w155 and my 241-11 if I got this one. I should be able to get somewhere between $300-600 for those two I think.

Thoughts on it as a do it all?

$600 isnt a bad price but it is probably the higher end of the range if its in great condition. For me, Id be more comfortable in the $400-$500 range on it, but I also have more machines than most.

If you can off load your other machines to recoup the price, and you verified it works well and nothing is damaged, Id say try and negotiate a better price and go for it.
