For everyone who is using google earth, here is a link for a topo overlay. I do most of my cyber scouting in google earth between this overlay and the aerials and then will look at other maps if I need to. For the aerial I usually change the date to a time when the imaging was done in the winter so I can see the ground cover and terrain a little bit better. 2002 is what I use in my area, it has better resolution than some of the older maps.

Sweet! I'm having troubles getting it to work though. It shows up on "my places" in GE but doesn't show on the map? :?:

You can check a couple of things. Scroll through the list of things included with it and make sure everything is off but the topo map. You may have to scroll far out and let it load, and then slowly zoom in, letting it load at different distances. If you go from far out to zoomed in quick it might not load. They also frequently release updates so you may need to download a newer version. I think it usually gives a message about that.

I miss I bing maps where you could go into birds eye view. You could really get great detail on what's going on.

Does anyone know of something comparable?

CalTopo is my new favorite. Better than Google earth and pretty close to the detail of Bing. It has all the layers built in and you can draw and add points and upload to your gps. It's all I've been using lately!

I love caltopo it really does it all. This yr the refuge I hunt flooded. I was able to get the elevation of the high water mark. I created a shading formula in caltopo & bam now I had everything that was flooded & everything that was dry. This sure saved me the time of driving 2 hrs & walking/wading to check out spots.

I do still use GE for public boundary lines.

Cal topo has boundary lines too in the layers tab. At least all of the Wayne Nat forest was on there in Ohio when I checked!

If I knew how to turn off that public land shading feature it'd work. For now I prefer just the outline GE has.
