Hey Flinginairos,

A big shout out to you for your innovative climbing method. I made a 3 step etrier (Thanks to DIY Sportsman) out of some heavy light brown nylon rope they sell at Home Depot. I cable tied and duct taped the knots, firmed the loops with plastic coated 1/4" wire rope (cable tied) and, with one Muddy Pro climber I can be at 20 feet in 5 moves. Plus, it's big fun! I'm 58 years young, I'm in pretty good shape, which I think you'll have to be to use your technique. Thanks!

I can't take full credit for the method but glad I could pass it along! I do think it's great for saving weight and you DO have to be in decent shape to be quick and effective at it. I think its fun myself and climb trees just for practice that way. I climbed one last night actually

I would not use paracord for that. You can get the 1" military webbing on ebay pretty cheap. Maybe I can get around to finishing my mod this weekend so I can post it up for you to see.

Yeah, if you could that would be awesome!

I did not have enough webbing to finish my project so I ordered more and will have to wait to finish it. I wanted to post it up with it completely finished but if I get a chance over the weekend I'll take some preview pics. I know that the system works because I used it all season but made a big change for the better at the end of the year on one of my sticks. Basically it is a 2 step aider on the bottom stick and a 1 step aider on the next 2 sticks based off of this video.

I still had trouble getting my feet into the aider's, especially on the way down, so I added a piece of rubber tubing in to one to try out and it works great and keeps it open much better. Something that I really liked about this system was that it worked really well for me into January when I was in my big cold weather boots and clothing.

Interesting, the step aider i made out of paracord holds well, but it does have the issue of not staying open enough for my boot to slide into. I made have to run to the army/navy store down the road to see if they have any webbing. I tried the one stick method and i was having a hard time with it, (probably just need practice though) going to keep tweaking/practicing. Interested in seeing you setup though red

Did a full run with my 3 sticks (really like them).

- first step had the paracord aider, other two didn't.
- got up to about ~20 ft pretty quick, about 8 minutes.
I was 20ft standing at the top of the top step of my stick, so I'm thinking that with a platform of screw ins could bump me up into the 22' range
-way down only took me about 4 and a half minutes

Fellas, you really might want to give this light brown nylon rope that Home Depot sells a try. While it weighs a little more (not much more) than the 1" nylon webbing, it's stiff enough to stay open, and as a result, is easier to get your feet into up or down. I also took a yoga block (basically a large chunk of cork) augered a couple of holes in it and tied it to the bottom of my aider to give my feet a couple of inches spacing between the tree and the aider for an even easier insert of my feet into the loops/steps.

I think (DIY) also took some 1" tubular webbing and inserted a 6-8" piece of climbing rope into it so it supports the bottom of the loopstep. Seems to work well is clean and simple.

I use one 20" Muddy stick with five step webbing aider to get that high. Just climb to the top of the stick, hang in the aero and move the stick up high as I can reach then climb back up. It's easy to do and I can climb as high as I want with very little weight to carry!
Just what he said.

Finally finished my aider mod on my sticks and this is basically what I did. Will post pics as soon as I have a chance.

I've really considered using the etriers with three sticks - two Lone Wolf and 1 Muddy (I like having my feet on two steps while setting up my platform). If I could make that work, and still get to 20 feet, it would be the perfect system for me.

Redsquirrel - how long are your sticks with etriers attached?

I will measure them tonight. I'm going straight to the woods from work today so I don't think I'll get any pics of them on a tree, but if I can at least take pics of them on the ground I will. If I don't post that tonight give me a reminder tomorrow.
