Hawk helium sticks

@Chase0089, I love the cam cleat and what you've done with your sticks, but I cringed when I saw you were using amsteel. I was fooling around with amsteel and an ascender one day and I did not like the looks of the amsteel after the ascender crushed it. Amsteel is not intended to be knotted because it can reduce its breaking strength down to 1/3 of the original. I see cam cleats or even the rope mod with amsteel as doing something very similar to a knot. Just be safe.

Those cam cleats look nice. So does your paint job!

@redsquirrel. I am getting ready to try amsteel. Maybe I am crazy but here is what I am looking at. Breaking strength of 1/4" amsteel is 7700 lbs. If it reduced to a third I am still @ 2500 lbs. Am I missing something?

I also, would like to hear if there is a better solution because I also based my purchase off of the breaking strength and working load of the amsteel.

I don't have any solid answers for you guys other than what I have said. All I can really say is that what I see some people trying to use amsteel for is not what it was designed to be used for. The other day @brydan mentioned his friend who worked for samson and shook his head when he saw people knotting amsteel. That just confirms my suspicions. I just want everyone to be safe guys, and seeing this pop up more and more worries me that something is going to happen to someone. Things work great until they don't work anymore...

It seems that amsteel doesn't knot well and seems to slip compared to other ropes, All rope strength is reduced with knots.

Here are my sticks on the tree. The longest distance is about 8'. They blend in perfectly.

That is an extremely good match on your choice of camo and the surroundings where you use it! My luck I would go to climb down and miss it entirely! (The step of faith that it was there.) That looks amazing! I habe been wanting to get the helium sticks but have not pulled the trigger. I was going to use the wife as an excuse but she is not sold on the saddle idea yet... Still using a lock on for her this year.

My wife was the same way but I let her watch a video on YouTube showing just how safe a saddle is and once she saw that, she was all on board as it is safer than a lock on. Good luck.

They are Ronstan cam cleats, and total weight per stick with the rope and mods is 2.9lbs. ...

Nice setup! I'd ditch the amsteel though for that application for safety sake. I do like the cam cleats on my muddy pros.

Did you have to drill out the hole to attach the cleats?

I don't like the idea of the Amsteel around the tree where it will experience significant abrasion. I'm a big family of amsteel, but right now I only use it on my bridge.

IMO a more abrasion resistant rope is better suited for sticks.

Yes, but I would strongly advise using a drill press if you have access to one. There is divided cross section in the stick and it will make your drill bit go left or right of it instead of through the middle. I found that put the hard way on my 1st stick and used a press for the others.

Just bought a set Saturday at bass pro. Got them hanging under the carport letting straps air out for a week or so. Very well built. Double steps is a plus. Now just got to order me a 4th stick, Lol

Good to know about amsteel. I will definitely look into a more abrasion resistant rope. Safety is priority 1 so would you have a recommendation that would compare in size to the 1/4" amsteel?

I am going to use a drill press on it when I cut it down to two steps. If I get the cleats, I'll use the press for that too.

Thanks!

Certainly good info. I will definitely look into a different type of rope with better abrasion resistance. You are 100% correct on safety. You can't put a price on your life and if there is a better solution, I'm all about that. I want to come home and see my kids and wife after every hunt. Thanks for insight.

Amsteel is in a league of its own when it comes to size, weight, and strength. However, when I did the rope mod on my LW sticks, I used Muddy safeline rope. It worked great.

I recently switch from amsteel to hollow braid polypropylene for my xop platform I use a Brummell splice with jim stepp knot. I noticed the amsteel starting to fray a bit.

I wonder how the cam cleats are rated? 200lbs working load 500 breaking? How much pressure would a 200 lb man put on a cam cleat climbing sticks?1
