Cool, hopefully when things cool down @g2outdoors can chime and give us noobs some guidance, lol. I watched @bowhunter15s video on his DIY sticks and I think he used 1/4 amsteel with a button that looked pretty sweet, I'll probably try that, although @DaveT1963 said the amstel can get noisy after some wear, not sure, it's hard to argue with that weight and strength!
Bowhunter15 is using 1/4" Amsteel on his 1.5lb DIY climbing sticks. His Versa button is really just a 1/4 ×20 allen head bolt with a steel fender washer 1/4" × 1.25" or 1.5" and a steel spacer 1/4" ID x 1/2" OD x I believe its 3/8" or 1/2" wide so it squeezes on itself. I fabbed up a couple sticks based on his design. I am currently awaiting my Amsteel delivery so I can make some 2 step aiders and attach my tree strap ropes. Bowhunter15 has a build post on here. I also posted have a bunch of pics and info posted on the SH FB page.(Dave Ryan on SH FB page). I reinforced my steps and they are still under 2lbs. Heres a few pics.

I know many people don't have a CNC router table or a waterjet to design/build their own steps. These steps I built were all done with a drill press, hand power drill, bandsaw, and tablesaw. I could have built them with less, but I used what I had available at work and home. I can check my "Versa Buttons" tomorrow and let you know spacer dimensions.

Really just personal preference. I use Muddy sticks with their rope.

Sent from my Galaxy S8.
The rope can add significant weight when it is on 3 or 4 sticks. The muddy rope is heavy, thicker and likely not as strong as 1/4 amsteel.
I beg to differ but I think it is more than personal preference for me.

I think 2 meters of 1/4 amsteel weighs about 48 g
I think 2 meters of samson predator which I expect is equivalent to the muddy rope is 200 g

150 g per stick... three sticks equals an extra pound.

I believe his are made from 2"x1"x0.375" 6061 T6. Onlinemetals only carries that in 6063. You could buy their 2"x2"x0.375" and cut it down if you wanted.

I bought Hawk helium for now and I'm going to cut them down. I was originally going to do a build this summer and make some mini sticks, but I just got too many irons in the fire. My business has me hopping this year. I needed to make sure I had a climbing system that I could use on public land before hunting season and I didn't know if I'd have time to do a build, but I still plan on doing one.

How long are you guys making your ropes for your sticks? And what size trees can you get around with them?
