Idea for classifieds

My biggest gripes with the classifieds are how much of a pain it is to upload pictures comparatively to other forums. Some type of feedback system or stickied thread would be nice. I'd much rather deal with people on here than other forums. If we could just close our own threads I think the prices and titles being deleted wouldn't be an issue.

I got burned once with Tapatalk when I purchased the Premium version or whatever. Then they updated their app and wanted me to pay more money to use the updated version. Haven't used it since.

I know we have a rule in place to mark an item as sold in the title, and request the thread be locked. No issue there. But I've noticed quite a few people delete the contents of the initial post, and the title, and just replace everything with "sold, please close". One thing being lost here, is data for buyers and sellers to use when negotiating pricing, or the entire description sometimes of an items condition and such. Can we find a way to massage folks into leaving all the important data, and just adding "sold" to the title? Or is there a feature we can add to lock threads on our own once the item is sold, or not for sale, without modifying the post?

Just a thought I had which may keep the classifieds more classy!

Thanks to all you folks keeping the place great, this isn't a complaint.
We've asked for that, there is a sticky in there that requests it. There isn't really a good way to enforce it though and the classifieds are too busy to police that and it's really unenforceable. If I were to lock people from modifying their title it would be harder for mods to know which threads to lock.
yes, I definitely don’t want to create more work for you guys, it’s already too much. I know the burden is really on us haha. We’re the dummies doing it, and with no ill intention of course. We just don’t see the consequences of doing it inadvertently.

is there a way to allow us to lock our own thread in just the classifieds? That might do it.
@redsquirrel this is a good question.
Just looked, there is not a way to allow people to lock their own threads although it has been suggested to the software company to add this.

@redsquirrel

I haven't seen any other forums that allow a user to lock their own threads. It could be nice from a moderation stand point, but I think it could create some other problems. I'm perfectly happy editing the title and waiting for a Mod to lock. I'm also in favor of requiring sellers to leave the original info/price in the post for others to reference. The "market is going to market" with or without that info, but having it makes things easier.

What I would really like to see is a buyer/seller feedback system. For example, I think the format/functionality used on AR15.com works very well. It doesn't require Mod involvement and is attached to the users profile. So, in addition to joined date, messages, and location; there could be a number of "positive" and "negative" ratings. You could easily see how many good and bad transactions a member has.

Screenshot example, user has a 100% positive feedback with over 300 transactions.

For what it's worth, I've only had one bad experience in the classified here and I'd consider it a minor one.

Sorry guys. I didn’t mean to make this an open complaint thread. I thought it would be a simple thing to potentially accomplish, or shoot down as not possible. That seems to have been done. I hoped it would also pull double duty as a reminder for users that it’s a good idea to leave the original info.

But it seems we’re now piling on to the guys who bust their humps running the site. For that I apologize.

Mods feel free to delete this thread, it won’t hurt my feelings. It’s not going as intended now.

It's been a project that has been in the works. I had some trouble setting it up and haven't had a chance to revisit it yet.

Thanks for the reminder @kyler1945. I'm guilty :disappointed:. Question for @redsquirrel that is relevant to this thread. Does deleting the images added to the classified threads reduce overall storage cost? Something to consider!

No issue, I think if members would help with classifieds post Titles then we can lock as normal it’s really not a big deal. It becomes one if we have to follow up or edit each close request.... it’s just a best practices thing

Good lord at all the excuses!!!
It’s not like y’all have jobs, Wives, kids, hunting, Fishing , eating and sleeping to do!!! Get in the ball boys!!!! Lol

It seems really simple. If you post in the classifieds you have to leave the title, the thread and when item sells just add please close to the title. No deleting. Can’t members only post in the classifieds? It should be really easy

See you in a tree, Ricky

Maybe in the long term, but it doesn't really matter. I like having pictures posted on the forum stay in place because it serves as a reference for someone at some point in the future. I can't tell you how many times I've searched the interweb and come across some obscure thing I was looking for in some internet forum. I hate when the pics are no longer there!

I'm full of them!!

What about not closing a thread unless the title is there. The OP should be able to reinstate the original.
