Any pointers for a new SH guy preparing for hunting into December which in MI can get into the 10s or 20s F? Since I'm wearing the Kestrel it seems putting my bibs on after climbing won't be happening.

I got a pack with front stuff flaps where I can quickly access a few layers. I had considered modifying some thermals/coveralls to be worn over the saddle. In the past, on the coldest days, I hunted on the ground. The big challenge is to not work up a sweat on the climb up.

If you have pants or bibs where you can unzip the legs to vent, you might be ok wearing them the whole time.

You nailed it on the big challenge JSD. Unfortunately I'm usually well-lathered by the time I get up the tree.

On long walks the insulation layers and saddle go in the backpack. Then put on all your bottom layers and saddle at or near your tree. After your settled in and cooled down add the top layers.

When it is 40 degrees or warmer in the morning staying cool is also difficult. With the sentloc head cover I overheat , but I think it must stay on for sent control.

Getting an early start and going super slow has helped me the most.

I have always carried my layers in and put them on at or near the bottom of the tree. I can add upper layers without too much trouble. With the kestrel it may be easier to put lower layers on in the tree with the quick release buckles. TBD.

Get one of these:

That sounds....sporty.

I want to look at finding a way to modify my bibs so I can wear my kestrel under them, basically have my bridge go through two slots.

What about coveralls or bibs that have slits cut in the sides to allow access to your inside pants pockets. Slip the bridge loops out through that.
I don't need that much insulation where I hunt so good luck to y'all northerners.
