Lead rope/strap

How hard are they to open up without a special tool.

Very hard. However, my special tool is a pair of needle nose pliers. They slide right up the pliers. Then I open the pliers (easy), put them on the rope loop, squeeze softly and slide them down the pliers and onto the rope loop.

Seriously, I have played around with this a bunch in the yard. Different ropes - I'm switching up.
And these things are awesome. I sent out a bunch of packages this weekend to folks here and I included a half dozen of these in each so others could try them out. Not just for this - I've already fallen in love with them for many reasons.

Castration bands... they aren't just cool to shoot at friends' eyes any more.

Yes, casration bands roll better on the stiffer sheathed ropes. It's a little mod but makes a big impact in keeping the static line "static" (thus increased safety).

I use a three hook lineman strap made of 9mm rope with a sliding center hook. It allows me to go around branches on the way up and also doubles as my tether once I get there. Let me see if I can find some pictures.

@Erniepower

Ernie,

I'm interested in trying this since seeing the picture you posted (single rope with three carabiners and a sliding prusik). Got my Mantis recently and the weight of both the Tethrd linemans rope and their tether is rather hefty. Making one of those ropes go away while maintaining the ability to go around branches would be awesome. My question is how does it actually double as your tether once you get to hunting height? Don't you have to disconnect the whole thing to girth hitch it to the tree? Pictures would be helpful sir. Thanks!
