Hey Guys,
A while back, my friend Casey Jones sent me a link to the initial post of the Pursuit Platform, and I was intrigued by the concept and the design of an injection-molded fiberglass reinforced nylon platform. I liked their idea, so I contacted them and told Pursuit I felt their product was innovative and exciting. Based on my experience with other products from companies like Genesis 3D Printing and Innovating The Outdoors, I felt an injection-molded platform would be a lightweight, quiet, and durable alternative to a metal platform. They thanked me for my interest and kind words and said they would update me when the product was ready for market.
Then I was surprised to receive a text from Pursuit towards the end of January asking if I'd be willing to test a prototype of their platform for them. I jumped at the chance to try this new platform design. I couldn't wait to try it out since our archery deer season was still open until February the 19th.
When the prototype arrived, it came with an over the center buckle and strap, two stick caddies that attach to the platform, and a back cushion/knee pad that covers the teeth on the back of the platform. The dimensions are 4" tall, sticks out from the tree 6 7/8", and is 10.5" across the front. It has two angles one side is fifteen degrees, and the other is thirty degrees and eight rows of teeth along the back. The prototype I received is 3D-printed PLA, but the production models will be injection-molded fiberglass reinforced nylon and weigh twenty-two ounces.
It arrived after dark, so I threaded the over the center buckle onto the strap and two of my squirrel steps and attached it to a post in my basement. It was simple to connect and rock-solid even on the small diameter metal post with a squirrel step on each side. There was very little if any flex when I applied pressure to the front and edges of the platform.
I took it out the next afternoon to one of my hunting spots and carried the platform strapped to my Sitka pack, and I didn't even know it was there. I quickly and easily attached it as I had in the basement with a squirrel step on each side with the fifteen-degree angle side facing up. Even though I was pushing on the front of the platform with my boots, there was minimal flexing, and the stand felt very sturdy! As much as I moved, the tree shook, but the platform didn't. I had plenty of room and didn't need to use the squirrel steps unless I wanted to move around the tree or pivot to look behind me. Most of the time, I had one foot resting on either side of the tree with my heels on the front of the platform. I was very comfortable and enjoyed the extra real estate that the Pursuit provided me, and before I knew it, legal shooting time was over, and it was time to pack up and go home.
The breakdown and pack-up were simple and easy as the setup was. I'm looking forward to getting out again with the Pursuit Platform! I felt it was lightweight, quiet, sturdy, easy to set up, packed and carried efficiently, and paired well with my squirrel steps. I like the innovative design and materials; the production model should be even more rigid and robust than the prototype, even though it was extremely sturdy.
The stick caddy is very interesting, even though I didn't use it in most testing. The stand-offs on my EWO sticks are very tall, and I could only get three of my sticks on the caddy at a time. Despite this, the caddy held the sticks securely with the included bungee cord and was very easy to attach and detach from the platform. You can also trim the caddy down to fit just one stick if you are so inclined. You have an excellent orderly package when you pair the platform with the stick caddy, especially for sticks with a smaller profile. The ability to have everything in one tidy bundle that you can hang on your pack is convenient and practical.
I liked this setup because utilizing my squirrel steps along with the Pursuit platform without any extra straps enabled me to use a platform or squirrel steps or both interchangeably with the same hardware. That way, I could adjust my setup on the fly and use what was needed or required.
The only part of the package that I felt could be changed or could use some improvement was the back cushion or knee pad. I felt for it to be practical as a knee pad; it should be bigger and made from a softer material. According to Pursuit, they are working on a newer version with different materials.
After hunting from this platform and setting it up on multiple trees, I'm looking forward to adding this platform to my hunting toolbox this year!
