Problem with new Treehopper Drill

Got both. Crawford’s all day every day.

I’ll take my CF bolts over cranfords any day of the week... and twice on sundays.

I am excited to get the new drill (I’m gonna wait on the new handle).
That will make my EZ-Kut a permanent power drill option.

@Scoutman and I have fully prepped 8-10 trees in the last few weeks with bolts. All they will need is a little hole clean-out during season.

I’m with you. I’ll never use a screw-in step again. I hate installing them. They need to be installed properly also as @redsquirrel has mentioned in another thread. If that foot step is off the tree and that step flexes it can snap.
But the main reason for me to use bolts, it’s just too easy not to.

You can prep trees now and they will still be good come October???

When is a good time to preset without leaving them? Or should I just stay out of the woods and drill as I hunt them?

In the late summer when tree growth slows. If you drill them in the spring you may need to dress them up by the time season starts in the fall.

These were drilled in hardwoods knowing that they will need to be “dressed up” in season. This is usually just the outer 1/4”-1/2” of the hole that tries to grow closed. It is a super quick clean out.

Don’t try prepping before late summer for any quick growing softwoods, though. Also, the pines around us are impossible to get the sap off, so I refuse to use a mobile set of bolts for them. I consider any tree that sappy to be a permanent setup only. It takes a bath in acetone to get pine sap off, and even then it is a pain.

I confess, I have not let bolts in the tree thru a growing season YET. I've talked to Mark about it and according to him, you can rig a block of wood that allows you to pry the bolt out.
I do have my own plan to test a way of pulling them. My thoughts...turn them with vice grips and if they screw out...great. If they dont screw out because the threads strip, then they should pull out with the vice grips using a pry block (which could be another bolt, stick, or anything to increase leverage). Vice grips are amazing tools. I plan to leave bolts in a few trees in my yard thru the growing season and experiment with extraction. We will see how it goes.

My "prepping g" this year was scouting and finding trees I wanted to hunt based on wea thwre and wind. I pin them and then drill day of when the weather/etc is right. Once I've hunted it once, it's prepped for the seasin :) I leave my ros.

This is my typical setup, but this year me, @Scoutman, and @DaveT1963 are sharing a lot of information to maximize our scouting efforts. Scoutman has a long history of using the same trees for many years (even if only sat once a season or two). Everything that will be drilled this spring will also have some decent shooting lanes trimmed out so there’s at least 15-20 fallback trees ready to go if hot sign is wanting.

Anyone know when the new drill with the folding handle and texture will be available?
