Rappelling gear/setup

Yes, I use the short Beal Jammy for an autoblock. I have a piece of Oplux (I bought 36') that my Safeguard stays on, it also has a small scew link on the loop. I also have another piece of Oplux (I bought 10' or 12' for that) that has a piece of Sterling TRC tied in a Distel. These are the only two ropes I need. I start my climb with the shorter peice, if I need to go around a limb a pull out the long rope, not all of it, to get around the limb. That's where the screw link comes in play. The long rappel piece is in a pouch on my saddle so I only have to pull out a few feet to go around the limb. With the screw link I don't have to feed the entire length back through the loop. So I get around the limb and rehook up my short piece and put the long section back in the pouch. Works great, I only need those two ropes and 3 biners ( one on the tether, one on the rappel/safeguard rope, and one for the autoblock). It's really a simple setup.

Good deal. I believe I’m going to be doing this this season with my spurs.

Thanks

I ordered a HollowBlock, will it stop me as a French Prusik/ autoblock if I let go of it? As in removing a stick, pass out...etc?

Yes, it’s flat and actually grabs tighter than any Prusik cord I’ve ever tried. You will have to squeeze it to get going. The exact number of wraps determine how fast you’ll go. I find 4 wraps work best on my 9mm HTP.

As a reminder. Sterling doesn’t recommend using this as a sole connection, i.e. tether bridge connection. Autoblock below rappel device (ATC) is a primary use according to their directions.

I used the safeguard for rappelling last year. It worked as advertised but was kinda jerky, especially with wet rope. I am going to try out the atc and hollowblock for this reason.

I was looking to go the direction of the safeguard. What size rope are you using? I really just wanted to try to illuminate the amount of stuff I had to carry and I thought the safeguard might be best for that. Would you not recommend this?

I use Sterling HTP 9mm. Don't get me wrong, it's a great belay device and definitely got me up and down the rope safely, I just didn't like how jerky it can be in certain situations. I never were gloves, so tending the rope with my brake hand wasn't as easy as it could have been. I would definitely recommend it as I still use it for ascending. I am just wanting to try the atc and hollowblock for rappelling. If I don't like that, I would have no problem going back to the safeguard for both. Kind of like a saddle, just a preference thing.

Could someone post photos on how you set up your retrieve rope on the girth hitch

The first image is easier to pull rope but you end up with the tag end in hand, meaning you’re pulling the eye/link through the tree. If there is a tight crotch to go through the rope will get stuck.

The second one can be a nuisance to get to loose sometimes but you end up with the link in your hand and then it is easy to pull the rope through.

What I did, is I tied a small prusic to my loop so it pulls from the middle of the loop. This helps getting it loose. Don’t have a picture of it right now, but I dig it.
