Scent-Lok, or HECS or neither

The only deer I killed last year I killed from a saddle. Unfortunately it was the saddle on a motorcycle... Totalled the bike and deer. I got checked out at the local hospital but the Good Lord kept me from any major injuries.
I only killed a doe last year. I had a chance at two nice bucks and messed them both up. I hit a buck with my pickup last year coming home from bow hunting. I was not even wearing my scent lok.
My only buck last year killed using a pickup for a weapon, It was a costly kill.
I am glad you were protected to hunt again and yes HE is good.

I don’t kill alot of deer by choice. Im selective and by no means would consider myself and expert. Im too young but in my relentless pursuit of whitetails i have learned many lessons and have adapted to those successes and failures. I will try anything in my pursuit and don’t discredit scentlok in any way nor the HECs products. I will always test my gear in the field and if I don’t have a positive result most of you on here will have gotten an opportunity to buy it at a ridiculous low price that i will always be glad to take a loss on.

I attached this link and it explains how sitka actually based its patterns by studying deer vision. Thats science and applying it. I should also mention that through my research found out that the guy who developed the camo pattern for Sitka has developed multitudes of different camos including cloaking type camo that bends light. I read its used by the military and is really cutting edge stuff.

I have tested sitka all of last year and I truly believe it works but like someone stated there are many variables in a hunt and only the individual can control certain things. Like i said earlier to each his own. No one system is better than the other its how well you use your system and maximize its benefits to be a better and more successful hunter.

I will never label myself as an elite hunter because im not. Im passionate, hungry, and aggressive when it comes to whitetails. I strive to improve my system where it has flaws and develop and grow to one day be like the John Eberharts, Wensel Brothers, Dan Infalt, etc. lol im an A type personality so failure is not an option it is a learning experience which to adapt and overcome to success!!

I hear that might be legal soon....

The drifting smoke will make the deer stupid. Let it drift to their beds. Justin wants it legal real soon. The game warden will probably deem it illegal unless you are wearing a magic suit.

Interesting videos.
Sitka is costs more than a saddle and sticks though. More than Scent lok. I have heard many others say they make quality stuff though.
It is interesting but it would be hard to get good field data. Some very good hunters say Sitka works and the video information is interesting.
I am more sceptical of the Hec stuff.

Scentlok cost was about the same as most other camo lines, so what can it hurt I thought. And I liked the Vertigo pattern. I now have a couple of different sets and have since learned the quality is exceptional. But honestly, the windproof layer on the Vortek is the only feature I truly know works. I love cold, but cold wind shuts me right down so this was a game changer. I still "try" to maintain a scent free regimen as well as play the wind. Although my scent routine is no where near perfect, I can't remember the last time scent busted me.. Oh wait, I can. I set out Tinks 69 wicks and had deer I couldn't even see blowing at 100 yds out. I don't use any scent now. ever.

I also bought the HECS base. Needed lightweight set and figured it also couldn't hurt. It is very light and works in that manner but hasn't held up to washing as well as the scentlok base layers. No clue if it makes me invisible, but deer have looked right thru me while wearing it. I'll still wear it.

I had both Scentlok and HECS before I started saddle hunting and definitely see way more deer now. There is also no doubt that I've spooked more deer with movement due to discomfort from cold wind, a cold metal stand, or having the wrong size saddle, than scent or the wrong camo pattern ever could. Comfort is confidence for me, and confidence creates success for most everyone.,

I tried smoking my clothes last year. Had limited time to hunt because my daughter was born in mid October. Had a group of does on my first hunt come into about 50 yards they acted slightly edgy for a few minutes then eventually calmed down. Next hunt I had a buck walking cross wind and ended up straight down wind at 40 yards I grunted a him and he eventually ended up coming into 15 straight down wind the whole time. Didn’t get a shot off be cause he came in on straight on till he worked his way pass me to 35 yards. He was aged at 4.5 by local deer farmer takin on heavy pressured pa public land

I have been really impressed with the Sitka stuff I’ve got. I don’t have much, because of the cost, but it is SOLID gear. I got their downpour jacket last year and that is the best rain gear I have ever worn, regardless of whether it’s hunting related or not. I took it on my elk trip, and we got rain twice a day for the whole week. The downpour jacket really saved me.

I typically ozone wash all my clothes in a tote before hunting, and will smoke down from time to time. But, I am really getting to where I’m just going to play the wind. I’ve decided that I can’t keep from stinking when my hunt starts with a 2-3 mile hike or kayak in. Not in high temps at least.

Makes sense in Texas

I don't use either one. I worry about staying still, quiet, out of line-of-sight, and in an area where hunters aren't "supposed" to be. I hunt high pressure, cold, and consistently breezy days when possible. I've had great success with days like this. Watch what chimney smoke does on different days, and you'll develop a feel for what makes scent "pool." If the weather/time/etc don't line up, I duck or squirrel hunt, or accept the fact that I'm playing a low-odds game that day.

I've done the scent control regimen and simply didn't notice a significant difference. I also hated the process with a passion. Too complicated and I always felt like I was missing something.

Now I check the weather the night before, pick a species, pick a location, and hunt. You've only got so much mental energy. Use it figuring out where the deer are going to be.
