Sharps' Folly or The Value of Kifaru

If I end up doing some videos, I think @always89y has set the bar pretty high with his production videos.

It might be a fun exercise to grab an old Fieldline or similar pack out of the closet, then replicate it with improvements for use and durability. Time is always a limiting factor for me though.

That would actually be great. Forehead- or shoulder-mounted GoPro and narrate your thought process as you go. I bet you could sell DVDs/Patreon/etc. with something like this.

@4090Sharps probably a less interesting question but how do you organize all of your fabric, webbing, grosgrains, buckles, zippers, threads etc. I just have a a box full of junk and it’s a pain trying to find what I need in there.

I wish I could tell you I had a bunch of rolling racks with dowels for holding rolls of fabric and webbing, and well-organized bins for zipper sliders and buckles--I don't. If I had the space, I would have that and a large cutting/layout table.

Right now I'm using one of those rolling wire racks to hold rolled up fabric in my garage, with the rolls stacked on the shelves. The previous owners of my house left a bunch of tall Rubbermaid cabinets in the garage, so I have my rolls of webbing, zippers, etc, stored in those cabinets. Buckles and zipper slides are each in their own ziplock bag. I wouldn't mind picking up one of the Harbor Freight rolling parts shelves or something similar in the future.

I would most like to see tips and tricks, your approach to something you have never sewed before etc. I personally don't really care about seeing you stitching the main panel of a saddle to support webbing or simple procedures like box stiching. But how you think about seam allowances, how you precisely plan and line up molle with the right tightness, grosgrain binding around corners, folds/pleats, making patterns, and recreating existing products to modify would be very interesting

I especially like the Fieldline pack idea because that's my go-to, but I have ideas on how to make it better. I like the drawstring or roll-top closure and buckle top flap, no noisy zippers. But I don't know where to start, or how to think about it.

Tons of helpful info in that video thanks for sharing. That dude is probably the biggest hard-A I’ve seen sewing lol. If you don’t have calluses on your hands you don’t really sew!!

I’m not @4090Sharps so I can’t build a Kifaru pack. But I did finally finish a project I’ve been meaning to build for 6 months. I hate using a Turkey vest because they’re hot and I don’t need that much stuff to warrant wearing a full vest. So I built myself a chest rig to carry a couple of pot calls, a few mouth calls, owl and crow calls, face mask, gloves, extra shells, and headlamp. Nothing fancy but it turned out ok. Honestly it still might be too big. It’s a copy of my Kifaru Rogan but in chest pack form instead of Fanny pack.

I love it, man! I think the size is perfect for the purpose and having your stuff immediately on hand while out turkey hunting. It's so much fun seeing the specialized solutions people come up with to suit their hunting needs and style.
