Simple SRT video

I would SRT every tree if I could, it is the easiest way up a tree. The biggest downside to SRT is getting the rope in the tree. Where I hunt there aren't many low branches to throw over and I only preset a couple of spots I can SRT. I do a lot of run gun so I use a single stick climbing method a lot.

One thing I should point out regarding the Safegaurd (or any similar device), if you commonly grab your tie in point to pull yourself up always grab the carabiner under it. If you grab around the top of these devices where the rope enters it will uncam and release indvertently.

Great point! I always tie off or hook up an ascender to the rope if I take my brake hand off of the rope, I know beating a dead horse here, just don't want anyone getn hurt! Thanks for the info on the Safeguard, seems like a sweet device, might have to try it out. How smooth does it rappel? I might be too attached to my grigri, lol!

I started with the Grigri2, went to the Lifeguard and am now using the Safeguard. For the record the Grigri is the smoothest on rappel but I really like that the Safeguard always locks up. For that I can live with a little degradation of the rappel over the distances I'm going.

How does the safeguard compare tot he grigri2 in size?

The Safeguard is exactly a Lifeguard without a return spring and colored black. Its probably between 2/3 and 1/2 the physical size. Also the madrock products seem to have less rattle to them than the Grigri.
Nice, thanks. I have a petzl pro rig which does the same thing but I don't bring it because it's big and bulky.

I've "never" had my grigri not lock up, knock on wood!! I might have to try the safeguard, I tried the lifeguard and didn't like the rappel, nothing worse than wanting to zip down smoothly to the ground and getting jerked around on that rope. The grigri is noisy though I will give you that althought with a little practice you can keep it quiet and a little heavier.

I'm ready to climb and repel!!

I’ve been messing around with my equipment trying to decide exactly what I want to use for SRT.

Thoughts:

-the 12” sterling sling makes a great short bridge, thanks to whoever recommend that as an option.

-the Ropeman-1 will absolutely work in place of a grigri or safeguard. However, I will purchase a grigri + or a safeguard in the near future. I’m planning to keep a ropeman on my lineman’s belt and tether and only have two. For a deliberate purchase I think a grigri or safeguard are better suited.

-rappelling with an ATC belay device and a prusik works but I had to use a very short prusik with my set up. A longer bridge would easily fix this problem but I do like the idea of a short bridge for rappelling with a saddle. In the future I’ll use a VT Prusik above my ATC or just use a grigri or safeguard instead.

This is how I’ve been shortening my bridge, saves a carabiner :

Good idea. I have one of those hollow blocks and a 12" sterling sling. What you have done could be accomplished with either and I like how your way saves a carabiner. Thanks for sharing.

@JCLINE84 , I finally got all of my SRT gear and I'm wondering how you went about attaching your foot aider to you Petzl Ascension. I think I may have the same foot aider as you. Has a small loop at the top and then an adjustable buckle. Seems like you may have tied a knot in yours? Thanks

@JCLINE84 ...sorry, I see what you did there. Looks like you added some tubular webbing through that top loop. Good idea
