Anyone here tried their hand at splicing rope for bridges Etc.? Seems like it would be the cleanest/strongest way to go if you do it right. Wouldn't mind trying it but obviously I don't know where to start  I read that a spliced end loop is rated 100% of the ropes rating I was pretty surprised by that!

I mentioned it on another thread and they said its simple, youtube it. Ive never tried it, but seen a video where a guy used a big needle type tool and it was easy/peasy as they say.

I've done some rope splicing but not on anything I'd have to trust my life to. If you want something custom treestuph has a splicing department they might work with you. Other than that you need a fid and you can do some of it with a bent coat hanger as long as your careful you're not breaking fibers.
Here's a manual. I prefer youtube myself. :)

Thanks guys! Definitely something I would want to practice before making anything serious. I figure I learned how to sew I might as well try to learn another skill as well ;)

Splicing rope is super easy. Plus an Amsteel bridge would slide very easily through a carabiner.

Good call on the Amsteel. Stuff looks super easy to splice! May have to pick some up and mess with that. Looks like it would be easy to splice for a beginner

It is really easy to do, and amazingly strong if you do it correctly (stronger than most, if not all, knots). But, you need a fid.

Where's the best place to buy one of those?

You don't need to buy a fid. I've spliced a lot of amsteel with improvised fids...ball point pens and loops of wire or old clothes hangers work very well. Look around on YouTube and you'll find TONS of videos of guys splicing with fids they've improvised. YMMV.

Yeah i'm not buying one for the amsteel. Looks easy with a simple loop of stiff wire. Heck I have some guitar strings that will probably work.

I used a wire coat hanger to do the amsteel.

I'm going to pick up some 3/16 or 1/4 amsteel and splice in fixed eyes for my bridge.

That's exactly what I am gonna do. I think a tight spliced eye on each end would be sweet!

Just don't use any of the wrapped strings and you'll be golden.

Wrapped strings? What do you mean?

The wrapped guitar strings will tear the fibers when you use them for a splice. I would use a electric G-string and yes saying G-string always makes me smile.
