Houston we have a problem!.... ground level testing as found a fail.... I’ll use this time to make sure I make clear that you should always test your diy gear on the ground heavily and you take all the risk on yourself.... I love this design and I think it can work but something will have to change looking for some insight from the seasoned stick builders who have been on here.... I’m afraid the welds hurt the structural integrity of the tubing.

Glad it was low level while testing! I asked a pro welder about doing some sticks and the design he felt comfortable with was only welds without any bolts involved. The bolts generate forces that the tubing can handle in general, but there is weakness introduced by the welds in the same area.

I think that’s a good point, I’m going to look at reinforcing the inside of the tube and eliminating the weld at the same time.

Keep at it! They looked super and the weight and package was as good as sticks get, I want to see them in use one day.

I dont think you have a welding problem. The hole in the tubing is acting as a stress concentration and taking all the load of step (diverting all that force around the hole in tubing). If your "insert block" was "L" shaped and went up into the tube and had the hole in the solid block, like you suggested, you might solve your problem.

This way all your force is spread out over a wider surface "solid insert block" and then transferred into the welds to the stick.

I think you’re right, these sticks have been on the back burner for a long time kind of lost interest as time went on I’ll go back to it at some point, right now I have lone wolf sticks modified to my own version of perfect!

Has too much time passed for these to still be relevant?

I’m pretty interested to see these come to life eventually.
Working on converting some old LW sticks to get me by in the meantime.
