How deep do you need to set them in the tree?

Sorry
If I drilled them in the spring
Would the holes all grow back in by the fall?

Just adding my 0.02 here. I really, really like my drill. Playing with it on my lunch break, I managed to drill 3 holes (knee, waist, and head height) in 2 minutes and 34 seconds. I think you could get up a tree with this almost as fast as with stepps. Very easy to use.
My only complaint as of now is noise. I'm going to order some stealth strips and nylon washers. That should eliminate the clank and rattle. I plan on painting my bolts with grey "stone texture" krylon paint. That should quiet them down a smidge and make them absolutely undetectable. Will most likely try to fabricate something similar to a cartridge holder to keep them separated and handy.
I plan on carrying this rig and my Kestrel with me in my turkey vest when I start squirrel hunting in September. If I see something that piques my interest, I'll prep the tree. I think it's gonna be great.
Did you find a way to make it quieter buddy?
Just wrap a rubber band around them or camo tape them first, then rubber band them together. Take them out one at a time. It works fine.

Sorry I was asking about the hand drill. Any way to make it quieter?
I did. I can get some pics up later if you want. I stealth stripped inside and out and actually cut a piece of plastic bottle into a washer to slip between the sleeve. Stealth strips actually "featured" my drill on their page.Did you find a way to make it quieter buddy?

Very quiet now and my favorite climbing method.

I did one on each side of the sleeve. Takes a very thin piece to make sure the sleeve still spins.Where did you put the washer?

It's the part you hold with one hand while you spin the handle with the other. The part you're talking about makes noise when you close it unless you strip the inside. The sleeve makes noise when drilling because it bangs back and forth. The sleeve is the part the drill bit goes into when it's folded up?

I bought 10 grade 8's and drilled a tree last weekend. I still think they will be a hassle in the dark. I am only using them to get up to my regular steps. I will leave twigs in the holes so I can feel them in the dark. I could barely see the holes in the daylight much less in the dark.
