Turkey...

Thanks I’d been hunting a big bird and thought this was him but went back and looked at pics and think I killed the wrong bird. Pics show two great hooks but this one had a nuggi spur on one side.

I’m not complaining at all as this a great bird anywhere. Just little bummed it’s over for me now. Hopefully “Black Beard” will make it another year.

This Saturday willl be my 5 year trying to kill a bird. Yes thats right its taken me 5 years. Now I didn’t do much hunting last year for turkey. I can call decently and I’ve gotten close a bunch of times. I just can’t seem to seal the deal. I’m ok with it cause like deer hunting i learn more every year. I have a good feeling about this year. I love just getting in the woods and listening to the woods wake up at first light, and also the sound of a distant thunder chicken sounding off. Today i will be spraying all my cloths and gear with permethrin. And making sure every thing is ready. Ive had it sitting out since February lol. Well good luck to those that havn’t Started yet and congrats to those that have given a cozy dirt nap to a Turkey already!

It took me about 6 years for my first one. That hunt took about 30 min and it was done. It's crazy how it took so many attempts. Then my first one was so "easy". It's just about being where the turkeys are. Good luck!

Tagged out in Florida.

Very nice bird! Done for the year? Is there only one season and one tag in Florida? In Wisconsin we could possibly shoot 5 in spring (there are 6 weeks but the first 2 are preference drawings) and 1 male/female in the fall. I’m not sure if you can get additional fall tags-I’ve never tried. Usually buy a fall tag just in case a nice Tom comes strolling under my tree deer hunting. I have 19 days 22 hrs and 19 min before I’m out chasing. Good luck to everyone!

If you were hanging from the saddle would you take a shot on a bird? I've wondered this with my first year bow hunting coming up.

I missed a fall bird last season from the ground. Shot right over her head

I shot a turkey my first time out after 1/2 hour with my dad when I was 19 or 20. It was the first year they opened turkey hunting in our area. Fast forward 12 years later and I finally shot another one. Now that I have the little one I'm on morning duty most days and my turkey hunting has taken a severe hit. I got on a bird last year which was exciting but it wasn't meant to be. It's ok, I need to save my time and good will for deer season.

Can always tell when it is turkey season down here. Always see about 5 gobblers feeding along the hwy on my way home. But the biggest ones I always see in my neighbors yard this time of year until about the middle of April. Than they leave when the woods are safe again.

I was drawn on a turkey from my saddle once. I missed my opportunity when he jumped up onto a dead fall and stopped for just a second. The area was thick and they were on the move. It was a group of about 8. Being elevated it was hard to pick out a Tom of the group and they were moving too quick. By the time I settled the pin it was too late.

I thought about trying out my saddle at ground level. Maybe get some extra stability and a better view off of the ground.

Yes done for the year. We have one season and a bag limit of two for spring. We have a fall season too during archery season.

I have not hunted turkey for very long. This is my third year. I think I am very lucky. I got two toms last year in maybe 6 sits. Both from my guidos web. Both with a shotgun at 10 yards. Was it luck or was it sitting behind the tree or was it having a good location. I do not know.

I got a fall turkey with a crossbow from a tree two years ago. The tree concealed me. More luck.
All three situations the bird did not see me until one second before I shot it. I am fairly sure being in the right place is important and based on my luck -sitting with a tree in front of me adds to my luck

Had a friend come yesterday morning to see if we could locate any birds. I've seen turkeys all deer season, and yet we heard nothing. He really had the owls cutting up. He was going to try and call my first bird next weekend. I told him if we couldn't locate a bird I didn't want to waste his time opening weekend. I went back this morning just to listen to the woods wake up, again nothing. I figured if they were there in the areas I've been seeing them, I should be able to hear them. I know(really I'm just assuming) the birds should be there. The neighboring property's are extremely thick and dosn't look like anything a turkey would want to mess with(another assumption). I know my calling is horrible, so I just sat and listened. Any thoughts?

How big is the property and is there any other land you can get on to scout/listen?
Is there turkey sign around - scratching, tracks or poop? Take a walk around and see what you can come up with. It may just be that it is early (At least where I am from-not sure about the south) and the birds are not that talkative. After watching some of the hunting public’s turkey tour in the south, they had a hard time getting on birds early and they weren’t very vocal.

As far as calling, I never though I was a very good caller either. Keep at it and mix it up. The cadence often times is more important than the pitch. Start off with the volume low and increase volume or change calls and location if nothing responds. Just because you don’t hear then doesn’t mean the aren’t there. Keep at it, have fun and good luck!

Just came out of the woods. Not a single bird heard.

There was a Mossy Oak Properties truck parked at one of the other gates. This worries me a bit. I've got permission on a portion of this farm and I don't want to lose it to a company that has DEEP pockets!

Just happened to me. The funny thing was I told the owner that I would have paid 2k more than them AFTER they talked him into taking the lease; and I had it in my hands and showed him. He could not get out of the contract and now he has to deal with those consequences as I start hitting public land. I’m not glad I lost the lease but I’m over people’s greed. On both of their ends. . Life is too short to haggle over a few hundred acres.
