walking in the woods: heel-toe and toe-heel

I'll have to try it, but how does a walking stick make you quieter? You can poke around to find quiet spots? You can better balance? Never heard this. I do have an aluminum telescoping hiking pole or two laying around to try this with.
I often walk with an arrow tipped with a Judo point. I can flick sticks out of the way, or "thin-out" a thick layer of dry fluffy leaves where I need to place my foot.
It's not always about being quiet, it about making the CORRECT kind of noise. Judo arrow helps me keep an established access trail "groomed". Each time I use it it's quieter than the previous time. Obviously done during the final approach.

Just to be clear, I'm not walking with the arrow nocked on the string, I just have it in hand for using it as a rake.
Also use it sometimes to help my balance which helps a lot for maintaining a controlled walk and foot placement.
For guys that don't carry judos, I would carry a sturdy, forked stick, probably 30-40 inches long. I think a section of fishing rod blank would work well for this purpose. Choose a diameter that would fit in your quiver's arrow gripper and rig some sort of "Y" on the tip to act as a "rake".

Leave the aluminum pole at home. Cut a 48” sapling with a “v”.

Balance is key. How often besides hunting season do adults walk around with a backpack on? Especially in the woods? Likely not often. Our muscles aren’t nearly conditioned as they could be. When you’re setting your foot down and find a twig that additional balance will allow you to reposition quietly.
It’s also useful for pushing briars and vines aside.

I get to practice my toe-to-heel walk each morning down our hardwood floor hallway. Sneaking out for work at 5:00AM without creaking and waking the babies takes training. You’d think I’d be better at hunting by now
