We talk a lot on here about going lightweight on everything. While going lightweight is always an advantage, often de-bulking can be just as, if not more important, especially if you can keep that weight tight in to your body such as in a pack.

For example, I find 5 plastic ameristeps on a strap to be quite bulky to pack. I have aluminum steps that weight about the same but are much smaller and I go to those every time.

I just wanted to make this distinction.

Agreed on the bulky ameristeps. Still working on finding a more packable solution

I agree with you. Both are important. If I could only have one, I'd choose less bulk as long as the weight gain wasn't impractical. Most of my Whitetail hunting doesn't necessitate ultralight gear. I typically walk 1 mile or less to my spots and bulky items dragged through thick brush are less efficient. When I'm elk hunting in the Rockies - reverse that.

Are the aluminum steps the ones you made from the helium sticks? I was going to ask how those were going

The ones I'm referring to aren't, but those would fit the bill too. I haven't hunted much since I made them, I've used them twice and they worked both times!

Yep one of the reasons Im looking at amsteel, packs small. The light weight is a plus.

Now I'm curious. What steps are you referring to?

I have some small aluminum strap on steps that I use. I picked them up from g2 last year and they are my favorite by far. I know a lot of guys want a bigger platform to stand on but it doesn't bother me to stand on these small ones. There is a pic floating around somewhere, I think for comparison in the DIY helium steps thread. If you can't find it I can take another one. I have 6 and I've never seen any aluminum steps this small before or since.

Yep I've seen those. I strayed from them because they didn't fold. I really hope I can get these folding skyhooks to mount on a strap. I haven't found a solution I like yet. They like side load unless I put a huge backer on them.
