You didn't kill that deer cause why?

I still got my buck, but was texting with @Scott F while in the tree the other evening and the phone is a major distraction and could have easily cost me the shot had it been a few mins later - he cam confirm the time from last text to shot! Do as I say and not as I do and put the phone in airplane mode and wear a watch to check time without being tempted to surf! it has cost me in the past.

3 minutes. It was three minutes from his last text until I read, "Just shot an 8pt".

...now I bring a battery pack with me along with a fully-charged phone and text EVERYONE I KNOW, starting as soon as I climb. Nope, I am not superstitious at all !

Had about 19 in the field last night. Had two shooters come in to about 70 yards. (Rifle season) Just let them walk, maybe if they got closer, but it was getting late, have enough meat in the freezer, and hoping my kids get a chance at them.

My downfall this year…. A buck came barreling into this creek bottom, and I got ready. I was behind my tree in the saddle and I drew while hidden and waited for him to continue into my shooting lane. A minute and a half passed and it should have been seconds, from where I was I couldn’t see him, and I didn’t want to go through the motion of letting down, so I swung out a little bit and peeked. He was right there looking at me. My bow was contacting with my bridge and I couldn’t get situated just right in time and he scrammed.

Picked you out of the tree While your drawing! Been there done that. The best way to beat this is to wait till they are lookiing in another direction then draw. Either their head needs to be behind a tree or wait till they pass you and are looking away from you. The other way to beat this is to draw earlier. That can work really well if they decide not to pass you. However if they stop for any reason where you can't shoot, then your stuck at full draw. Sometimes that works out, sometimes it doesn't. Most of the time, you have to let down. They will pick you as soon as you let down. Especially if there are more than on set of eyes. I've been caught at full draw a few times. Time ticks by VERY slowly. Not a good situation. I now prefer to wait. Usually a good opportunity to draw presents itself. Sometimes it doesn't. I've been burned by being too patient as well.

Thought I'd bring this one to the top. I have a new one. I was practicing this week and I noticed my arrow is squeaking on the rest as I draw. This will be rectified before I go in the woods. Definitely could cost me on a quiet morning and the deer was close.

Me and my 9 y.o. daughter last week. We were sitting on the ground beside a blown down cedar and behind a throwdown blind, the kind with stakes and fabric that is about 24" tall. Prime time was coming on quick and my daughter needed a snack, so I unwrapped a granola bar and passed it over, she was perplexed why I didn't give her the wrapper too:tearsofjoy:. As she goes to snacking I noticed a rather white branch 45 yards or so from us that I hadn't seen before, then it hits me that there's two of them and they are being rubbed on a 5" diameter tree. At this point the buck is head down, eyes behind the tree and has no idea we are there, so I tell my daughter to drop the granola bar and shoulder the crossbow. She stares at me like I'm speaking French and keeps snacking. I explain why and where the deer is and she hands me the granola bar and starts shouldering the crossbow. Unfortunately the buck has stepped around the tree and is bee lining towards us as she settles in, with lots of head bobbing and fidgeting to get everything just right. The buck stops and turns broadside between 30 and 35 yards, wide open vitals. I can't see his head but can tell he is staring straight through my daughter trying to figure out what just moved. At this point the safety is still on and she has done zero shooting past 20 yards. I haven't explained to her what the extra lines in the scope are for or what do do if she needs to split lineso_O. So I whisper hold still and keep it on him, see what he does, which she does perfectly. He decides to circle to the left, which puts him behind the downed cedar tree, no way to move the crossbow and get my daughter repositioned for a shot. I've got my bow with me and it is laying to my left and I'm tethered in to a tree, allowing me to grab my bow and try and position for a shot. He catches a bit of movement and decides that he better keep his distance. He never got our wind and trotted off calmly so I expect we have a chance to see him again. If I had started by telling my daughter there's was a deer coming she may have been settled in and still enough to get him closer and take a shot, if I would have discussed what the extra lines were for she could have taken a shot. Overall I consider the hunt a success, she did great with everything and is ready to go again, except now she knows how to aim for deer that are within 35 yards.

I have a new one. I've been under there weather for about week. It's mostly over but I'm still coughing occasionally. Sometimes it just happens when I take deep breath. It's almost uncontrollable. Fast forward to yesterday AM. 2 does feeding my way 60 yds away. I'm thinking "mmmm, do I want to fill my doe tag?" Yep! while watching them, here comes one of those coughing attacks.. Game over! She alerted and started blowing. Then she ran off and was blowing the whole time. I Never saw another deer.

here comes one of those coughing attacks
My stepdad gets bad coughing attacks (bronchitis) and I asked him: "how does this not affect your hunting." And he basically said he eats cough drops all morning.

Here's another one. It Hasn't happened to me personally but I can see it screwing up a kill in a lot of different ways.. I saw this on U tube this AM watching the Dan Infault Hunting Beast. He was in Iowa. He lost a big one cause he was messing w/ his camera. The camera malfunctioned at the wrong time and he was trying to fix it while the buck was coming in. Things didn't go right, he rushed his shot and made a bad hit. Lost the buck. Said it was a 160-170". Buck of a lifetime for most guys. Sad.
