Yeah, I'm pretty stoked. Means I've got money for accessories. :)

Prepare to see pics/video of me throwing that bike in the canoe, and possibly using the bike to haul the canoe! I'm brimming with ideas....

So it looks like I'm getting an '08 Specialized Hardrock for $100. Works nicely since the closest shop is a Specialized dealer. :)

Might be picking it up tomorrow. Should I sponge paint it, stealth strip it, or camo form it? ;)
Definitely sponge paint

Just finished my bike. Started with a wall mart mongoose dolomite fat tire bike for 220.00. Tried no motor, that was a no go.... fat tire bikes suck with no motor! Ordered a bbshd and battery kit off Amazon for 1100 and just put on the amazon store card so I got 12 months 0 interest. Changed the seat to a nice comfy one and added atv gun/bow holder. This thing is awesome! So glad I spent extra on the bbshd instead of the cheaper route with a hub drive. This thing just powers up hills and is almost too fast if there is such a thing. Wound up at about 1400 all in and got much more powers than the base model pre made rambo’s Etc

That is awesome! Crazy how much power they have. I actually backed the power down on mine in the programming so it isn’t so fast in the woods. Much easier to control in rough terrain now.

Tethrd-Ginger Ninja/Fire Crotch Fiddler

I’m itching. Mine ships on the 21st.

Well, there she is! Took it for a quick ride to the end of the drive and back. Seems to shift fine, and doesn't shake, rattle, or roll. Well, it does actually roll...but in the good way. :) For the money I think she'll hunt.

Shout-out to all the guys who have helped me out, especially @Lacky and @Bwhana. I'm excited to possibly begin a new hobby, and anticipate getting a lot of utility out of the bike this fall.

I think I'm going to take her for a short ride tomorrow morning before it gets too hot. I'll drop her off at the local shop for a tune up later this week, and buy a pump, spare tube, lube and helmet. Anything else I need before I start riding it to get in shape for prime time?

Some may tell you to get a different seat ,but that one is fine. It takes a while for sit bones to harden internally and once they do, it will be fine as is, plus sitting on other hard surfaces will not bother you. It looks like it has a water bottle holder, but was hard to tell in the pic. If not, get one, they are cheap and worth it. That is a great bike for the price, got a great deal! Enjoy

You stole that one. Good pick up. Enjoy
I like bikes with bigger wheels they seem to roll over things easier. I ride a 29er I like it good enough

Definitely get a helmet. A good floor pump is crucial too, running proper PSI will give you a better ride and help prevent flats. Those pedals will work but you may want something “stickier”.

Also, I know you said your not into bags but look into a frame bag or other bags that “bike packers” use. They’re a weight weenie group of cyclist that do lots of off road use so it’s not your traditional rack/bag setup.

BikepackingDOTcom will be a good rabbit hole to dive down for some ideas.

Have fun, bikes are rad

All the barings are sealed cassettes so the only thing you need to oil is the chain. So pick up chain oil or use 3 in 1, motor oil, even wd40 works if you spray it on every couple rides. Just do use something and keep the chain lubed. Get a patch kit with tire levers and then actually take a tire off the rim. It's better to figure out how at home before you need to for real. Some tires are pretty tight. Other than that just have fun on it. Newer bikes need lots less maintenance than they did 40 years ago before everything was sealed cassettes.

You can pass on the floor pump and just get a compact one that goes on rides with you. It's more of a pain to pump up the tire with it but you need it anyway and it works fine. A floor pump is nice to have, and really nice if you have a whole family your maintaining bikes for, but you'll be fine without for now.

Guys I'm 56, just cranked out 6 miles through mud, hills, pastures, weed fields, cow trails on my cheap fat bike non electric.... in 5 hours.... carrying cameras, salt and a climbing stick....... its work, I sweated a ton (90 degrees) but it sure made it easier than walking.

Oh

My

Gosh

I love this thing!! 8 miles in one hour on the WMA roads. This place was made for a bike, and I should have done this years ago.

45,000 acres of hardwood flood bottom. Gate is closed 90% of the time. If it floods they close it, and they don't open it unless the roads are dried out and repaired. Well, it floods at least once a year, and it takes a LONG time for it to dry up enough to implement repairs.

It was closed today, but the roads were completely passable on a bike. I'm estimating there's probably 30+ miles of road easily. It would take an 8 mile walk to get all the way back in. Not really feasible at walking speed. But in a bike...Just lift'er over the gate and go!

Once I get her tuned up, buy the essentials, and get comfortable with emergency repairs like @Lacky mentioned, I'll probably start hitting it every weekend. I think I'll try to build up to 20 miles. I may have to rig a waybto haul my pungo, because there's several creeks and lakes back there that should be wood duck meccas. One in particular is a land locked lake, about 5 miles back. Ain't no local redneck getting back there when he can shoot at a couple ducks off the kayak launch.

This is going to basically be like having private access to thousands of acres of oak bottoms. Since there are entire seasons where the road is closed, I'm willing to bet there are bucks back there that have never seen a hunter.

I do need to figure out some details though. Will probably buy a bigger pack, since I'll most likely want to cram my saddle, regular gear, bow, and change of clothes on there. I don't think I'll want a bow rack or saddle bags. I also probably want better shoes than camo crocs to ride in.

Other than that I should be good. It rode very well, and I did not find the seat to be uncomfortable at all. It did make a little noise though, and it seemed like it hiccuped shifting a few times. Hopefully the tuneup will fix that.

Man, I'm ready for season to hit already!!
