Using my newly created Ameristep/ amsteel steps with the timber hitch. I set three steps to pull a card. My top step let go and I slid down the tree. With only a tree burn on my arm and a rapid heart rate as a result, I landed safely on the next step down. I figured for sure the timber hitch let go. It did not. (No pun intended).
My bury was only 4” or so. I think the amsteels strength has lulled me into this short bury. And I know better as I use this chinese finger method on my big game fishing gear. I changed everything to 12” minimum. Im also thinking of a locking stitch. I am in Ohio Monday and Tuesday. I will be pulling many cards and setting many cameras. I trust my new burys will hold. Just wanted to let you guys know so it doesn’t happen to anyone else. 12” burys from now on.

Locked Brummel or just a bury? Check our the locked Brummel if you’re not using it. There’s also some resources on FID lengths and correct bury amounts on here somewhere if you search

Thanks for sharing. Hopefully these kinds of posts help others avoid making the mistakes some of the rest of us have made. @redsquirrel, just thinking over coffee this morning that maybe a separate subforum for Near Misses, Lessons Learned or Safety Observations would be a good place to consolidate these types of posts so that they don't become lost in the post history.

Just a bury. I knew where to find the fid length chart too. I am also thinking of going out and then back in. That maybe called a locked brummel, Im not sure of the name.
I second a new forum for near misses.

I have to say I thought about not posting as I was embarrassed, the thought of someone else making the same mistake 20 feet up pushed me to post this.

You made the right decision to discuss the near miss. It is easier to swallow some pride and deal with the tree burn than live with the guilt of possibly preventing someone else from a serious accident. Glad you are ok. Learn and live fellas! Be safe, don’t assume or hurry! Nothing is worth your health!

I don’t think a separate forum for safety stuff is a good idea. People already don’t pay attention. If you consolidate, and separate the stuff from the feel good fun stuff, it will never get looked at.

I agree with you all it is important enough to have its own category. Unfortunately, we have a good idea of human nature. I think the best bet is to force feed it by leaving it in the other sub forums. Honestly, I wish there was a ‘must read to continue to forum button’ red could attach to new safety/accident posts that required you to open before moving on to the rest of the forum. We can’t go that far, so sprinkling the reminders throughout the forum is the best we can do.

Glad you’re ok OP. Thanks for sharing. Pictures of exactly what you tied, and how it came apart, are extremely helpful. You know what you mean when you write it, but there are dozens of people reviewing these threads who have no clue what you are talking about.

How about a sticky thread with links to the threads?

If your not using a locked Brummel or a lock stitch with a regular splice. It won’t matter if you use a 20” bury at some point it will come out and you will likely fall and get seriously hurt. Reading this post it sounds like you did neither.

Everyone needs to be digging in and learning this stuff. Ask questions. Call manufacturers. Do the things that will keep you safe. Your life is at stake.

Did your climbing belt or tether prevent your fall to the ground or just your bear grip on the tree?

This is a great idea. Those interested in doing the right thing will visit threads like this and apply what they learn from others mistakes. The ones who don't, well, you can't fix stupid. You also can't force people to be safe and not hurt themselves. I think having a resource available for everyone especially the newer crowd who just doesn't know any better is a good thing.

Now the question- where? Climbing methods, DIY, anything saddle related???
Decisions like this are why you get the big bucks! :D Personally I think the proper place is probably "Climbing Methods and Platforms" since those the areas where most issues are likely to occur.
