Fleece Saddles

Good find! Those caught my eye the other day too, but I have a few at home already. Your fleece saddle video ruined me and I can't find anything I like as good as fleece, back in mine for second season.

The folks saying comfort is the main concern have obviously never spent much time in a fleece saddle - it doesn't get any more comfortable than fleece (Sorry not including JX3 as that is more of a tree lounge than a saddle to me - not banging it just not including it my comments).

For me, sit drag for early / hot season and fleece for every other time. A good alpine harness with added LB loops is less than a pound. Fleece with accessory cord bridge in sheet bend knots to fleece configuration, the weight is insignificant. Unadorned sit drag with amsteel blue bridge, the weight is insignificant.

For me, it is not a decision based on lack of funds (I have spent way more on clothes/packs/platforms/gear/hunting weapons). It is just the simplicity and ease of use and easy replacement (fleece or sit drag) when it ends useful life, and comfort (I am looking at you WalMart Fleece!) that is the draw for me.

I hunted out of legacy trophyline saddles with legacy Stepps as platform (lone wolf sticks or Stepps for ascending) for years.

Sold the legacy trophyline, switched to sit drag and fleece, and recently purchased the ridge runner platform. I have purchased, and returned, commercial saddles. I want to like them, but their use is not compelling to me.

I am still not thrilled about any commercial saddle.

I still use my Mantis saddles as they are very convenient, well made, and do everything need a saddle to do. But I agree, nothing hangs quite like a fleece saddle.

Has anyone tried a DIY "fleece saddle" made out of something lighter than fleece for warm weather? Like say a pillow case or similar material?

Also, how do you tie the ends? I found this video on YouTube that shows one method:

Is this what everyone is doing or is there another knot/method for securing the bridge to the ends?

My experience is that fleece is not hot, even in september in the Alabama swamps. But yes, used to you could get 1.1oz realtree camo ripstop nylon. The sling I made was like the size of a tennis ball!

Wish i had bought enough of that stuff to make a hammock and tarp for camping on the WMA.

cotton is not a good substitute IMO, tears to easy. ever try to tear fleece. And fleece doesnt stop wind, and stretched fleece is even more porous, so you are worrying about nothing as far as being hot.

In your experience, what is the ideal size to start with? L" x W"?

Oh man is been awhile, Sam Potter and Swampsnyper gave some original specs I followed. Truth is it can be as wide and long as you want. mine was to where the connect points was just in front of my hips and it was wide enough to completely cover my rear end.

I've wanted to try a fleece saddle. The RCH always holds me back.

Is there a decent but moderately priced RCH out there that has lineman loops already on it? I haven't looked a ton but I've never found one.

You can easily add one yourself to the main belt if you have some accessory cord laying around and know how to tie a double fisherman's knot...

I just bought a yard of camo fleece at my local Wally World for $7.50. Going to try it out tonight...
