Check your state. It will usually be 2 or three times the daily limit is the possession limit. Meaning if six is your daily limit then you can have twelve or eighteen in possession ( ie in your freezer). Once you consume six of those you can get six more. Those numbers are just an example so be sure to check your state regulations. And don't forget that federal duck stamp!

I have hoped for years and years that we could have season quotas instead of daily limits. Our limit here is 6 a day, of which 4 can be mallards (no more than 2 hens). Our season is 60 days long, so that is 360 birds if you killed out everyday. There have been several years I could have killed my "yearly quota" in a 3-4 day period if we were allowed.

You basically can NOT hunt ducks legally if you have ducks and are killing them. There’s so many different laws and different interpretations of laws that you could be ticketed for SOMETHING every time you go and kill birds.

My advice for the young man would be to stay off social media during duck season.

Maybe in a your state but not in mine or any of the other states I've hunted. This has to be the worst advice I've heard in a long time. If he learns his states laws he'll be fine weather he's on social media or not.

Number one rule in duck killing is don’t talk to anyone about killing ducks!!!! Regardless of how well I’ve been doing my answer is the same to every person that ask, “we need fresh birds”. That way I’m never giving out to much info and I’m not lying cause I would like fresh, “new” birds lol.

Telling folks to make sure they know ALL the regs is hardly bad advice....

If you’ve never tagged a duck then I can guarantee you that you’ve been in violation while duck hunting.

If you’ve ever taken a hero shot I can guarantee you you’ve been in violation.

If you’ve ever shot in a group then I can guarantee you you’ve been in violation.

On and on.....

I’m not saying the hunters are outlaws, I’m saying the rules are all over the place and many are simply unknown. And one of the main reasons for that is the duck hunting you see on YouTube and television that makes so many folks think duck hunting is so cool contains multiple violations per episode and no one knows.
 
While I agree there are a lot of regs related to duck hunting I don’t know where you are coming from. Please tell me what reg I broke in my “hero shot” above showing my two mallard limit. BTW, shot another two green heads this morning and can guarantee I didn’t break any regs!

What causes the regs to be so all over the road? Is it state or federal? I gotta admit my vision of duck hunting is 3 guys in a blind all jumping up together like on TV with dozens piling up around them

Yes and yes. Mostly federal. Read up on the migratory bird treaty, plume wars, and Guy Bradley. Interesting history behind waterfowl regs.
 
@kelly.jayp, add this to the list if ya ain't got it already: boot dryers. And either buy or build wader dryer attachments. I'm sitting here mucking with decoys for tomorrow (5 hours of sleep again tonight...oh boy!) and looking at what's gonna be a toasty-dry pair of yoders for tomorrow's hunt. Can't beat it.
 
Definitely federal.

For the most part you will never have to worry about it because federal agents aren’t cruising around looking to bust Joe the duck hunter. But, should you manage to get onto the federal agent’s radar you WILL be in trouble because there’s so many laws, mostly relating to the handling of birds that have been reduced to the bag, that simply aren’t common knowledge.

Here’s a pic after a nice hunt where my son and I both killed limits....

....great hunt, even got check by local DNR and all was well, but that picture is enough to get a couple of tickets written by a federal agent.
