Absolutely!!! Killed my biggest buck January 12th ( 20 years ago) late season is tough unless it’s bitter cold & you have a hot food sourceHe ain’t huge but I think he’s a beautiful buck. We can say whitetails are beautiful right?
I’m back to the point where there isn’t much sign and I don’t know what they’re feeding on or doing. Late season is so strange! I might get out there again and see if I can catch this guy traveling. They’re still using this funnel, just less consistently. View attachment 80435
I shot him and trying to find him now. Blood ran cold at 200 yards and got rained on. No arrow found. That's a nice buck. Im shooting that deer 10/10 times unless he is standing next to a bigger one.

No joy. We had like 1.5” of rain and it washed out real bad in the swamp I was in. Dog didn’t help much at all. It couldn’t even track to where we stopped tracking the night before.Did you end up finding him? Dogs in your area?

This swamp would be a great place for it since it’s so open in the winter time. That's a bummer. You need someone with one of those thermal drones.
Reflecting on this buck I didn’t find I’m not disappointed at all in myself. I have had target panic before and struggled making a good shot in the moment despite being above average on the range. I have acknowledged these mistakes, short comings, and bad shots I’ve made in the past and beat myself up over them plenty. This hunt was not that. Everything was perfectly executed and thought through without overthinking. I had the most confidence in my shot leading to a dead deer than I might have ever had before. I had ample time, I made sure I wasn’t going to hit any limbs, I was already drawn when he came into sight. I picked my spot and reverified it before releasing the arrow. I watched that arrow impact where I aimed. Not getting a pass through and heavy rain is what hurt me finding that deer the most I believe. Me doing great and the result still coming out crappy is what was/is so frustrating. The losses in deer hunting are heavier than the successes for me.
100 gr 3 blade fixed g5 montecWhat broadhead and total arrow weight are you shooting? Just curious.
100 gr 3 blade fixed g5 montec
100 gr insert
69# draw, 29 or 29.5 DL
30” arrow, 300 spine, GT Hunter XT
Should be right at or below 500 gr TAW
Believe me, I am tooI'm surprised you didn't get a full pass through with that setup.
Believe me, I am too
Yea they are sharp. I don’t think there is anything wrong with the broadhead. Not much you can do if you catch the shoulder on the opposite side like that.I'm assuming your broadheads were really sharp, too?
I shot two bucks with montecs this year, and my TAW was 381. My hand-me-down bow was shooting these arrows at a lighting fast ~250 fps. I've already built some arrows for 2023 and depending on the broadhead I choose they can range in TAW from 480-550. I think I'm going to shoot QAD exodus or Magnus stingers this year.
Do you have any private land down your way or are you hunting like talledega, eufala, or somewhere else? They should be fired up now.Guys I'm down to 10 days... it's been a weird season this year for me. I'm not quitting yet though.
