I had a similar situation trying to climb a tree the day after an ice storm. Couldn't get traction on the tree for anything and beat myself up because I was too stubborn to just hunt on the ground instead. No damage to anything except my pride, thankfully, besides bumps and bruises and soreness.

That I think is different than the aider issue.

Last season, I tried climbing 2TC on ironwood after and during a soaking rain. The trunks dry were fine but when soaked were slicker than snot. In the end, I climbed to height but were frazzled, exhausted and soaked.

Instead, eliminate the variables and what are the issues?

For me, footwear makes ALOT of difference when I climb. I tried using aiders with my rubber high-top hunting boots, and found it to be too painful & awkward. Those I now use when hunting on the ground.

So, when I climb, it's leather boots with lug soles (usually vibram) & no more pain. Makes sense to me, because all of my leather hunting boots have much stiffer soles than the rubber ones.

I think I had a situation, I was climbing using a cable aider and a versa aider. When I stepped into the cable aider, toe into the tree, I had a kick out that twisted my foot putting side pressure on my foot. Yes I was sober!!
Do you climb wearing crocs? I’m wondering more about the sole of your shoes. I had plantar fasciitis for a year and a half and am on my feet all day at work. Foot pain sucks and I hope you get it fixed quick. Best of luck and wear good shoes! I’ve had great luck with 860 New Balance for daily wear.

I have been toying with the idea of crampons, like ice climbers use, or toe spikes of some sort to ensure good traction on the tree while climbing with an aider. Really, though, rather than trying to force something to work, maybe 1-sticking with an aider is just the wrong tool to use on these trees.

I really dislike an aider more than 1 step. But adding 1 step to each stick on a set works great
