What did you do today that’s related to saddle hunting?

I threw my back out Thursday, an ongoing issue with me from time to time, so I was going over all my stuff today since I couldn't hunt. Had everything laid out on a table in the garage and just doing some general maintenance type stuff. My wife happened to walk out and saw some general fuzz and wear on my saddle. She walks over and says "looks like it's about time for a new one". Now mind you I don't need any permission or anything to buy what I want and she does the same. But talk about a green light! I nonchalantly say "Yea your probably right". That was a wonderful moment. So now I am like a kid in a candy store. Mine is fine so not rushing into anything, but it was awesome.

Alaska at heart isn’t going out cause it’s snowy and windy?! But aren’t those the optimal conditions for killing a deer?!
Roads were bad.....visibility poor due to blowing snow.....not fun hanging from the side of a tree. Maybe sitting in a blind if I had a spot that was promising, but '23 has been kind of a tough year. Many of my friends have been way down on sightings and shot opportunities. That is when you start begging off during questionable weather.

Today a Voile strap trio arrived in the mailbox. I got them as blems on ebay and the came right from the company....look fine to me. Those are going on my Beast sticks in three different colors. How special.....LOL

Had my first successful SRT climb. I feel like I cheated since I bought a GriGri + and a CTI rolling lock ascender with pulley…….I swore I’d not go that route! That said, I went that way and am so happy I did! I made a whoopy sling for a footloop which turned out to be money! It’s easily adjustable while I’m hanging there trying to get the hang of it.
A tip for first timers-I found it much easier and more efficient to set my footloop long enough that when I stand on it, my leg gets to full extension. I went up just a step or two and came down getting the feel and building trust in the new GriGri +
Each time I’d go higher til I climbed to the crotch …..I’m wore out!

Almost forgot….I killed my first deer from a saddle this week! It was also my second bow kill and my first buck with a bow! Not a giant, but my desire was to simply kill one with my bow and put meat on ice…..SUCCESS!

Congrats on your buck.and first from the saddle. I got my first from a saddle a couple weeks ago.....a doe. Deer were scarce this year....I had bucks on trail cam pix but didn't see one with my own eyes. Enjoy the venison and memories. Good deal!!!

Yesterday I made an SRT Video. I need to learn to edit it and fix a few mistakes, but it was fun to do with my kid holding the camera…..almost as fun as the climb itself!
It can be found in the climbing methods section if you wanna watch me having fun!

Tried out my new Barren Ridge climber platform today. A little smaller than I anticipated but it worked great. Easy to climb with and is lightweight. Just have to climb trees that are not too large which I prefer anyway. Its weight setup to hunt was 3 pds 9 oz. My saddle is a Trophyline Covert Pro 2.0. and ropes. The weight of it, knee pads, and gear strap, and carry bag was 7 pds 9 oz. This gets me hunt ready at a little over 11 pounds of gear. If I carry my 3 beast sticks and Edp platform Im over 20 pounds. Just cant get myself to pack all that. There is a flat scout on the top beast stick. That setup was 15-16 pounds without the edp. Atleast I have plenty of options now. I will mainly be using the Edp for presets with cheap walmart climbing sticks already on the tree. The beast sticks will work where the climber platform want. Half day hunts are fine with just the flat scout. The edp and climber are about the same in comfort, could easily set all day with either of them. I could probably shed some weight with other sticks but I like the ones I have. They are rock solid in the tree. My saddle kit is on the heavy side. I really like that it is taller in the back and don’t need a back band, that is why I have stuck with the trophyline. May consider something else when this one is done.

Aaaaaaaaaaannnnndddddd??????!!!!!
It'll work if one's willing to do the extra work: Redundant tie in and dedicated backup device.

I was hoping I could use it for tree work too (rope walking). No dice on that. The backup device didn't self-tend fast enough. You'll likely need a full body harness for that (as this backup device is originally intended for anyway)
