    Kestrel/Steppladder system week3

Yeah mine kicked out the very first try with no aider. Soft small tree so it was my error for sure. I try to use basketball sized trees now and avoid Elms. So you use a long tether? Thought about getting one and leaving it in place on a good tree but worry about the loose line below me. Always...

    Kestrel/Steppladder system week3

Nice! Yeah I’ve tried it a couple times, just never used it in a live situation and did like you, used them on the first 3 stepps. Figure with time my comfort will get better. Took a tumble the first time I used them and I think it spooked me a little.

    Kestrel/Steppladder system week3

I use 8 stepps and make a platform with 3 and a hand grab. I’m at about 16 ft right now but I haven’t started using the aider yet. Wanted to be good with the basics first. The deer tonight had no clue I was there until the wind shifted and I think they winded me.

    Kestrel/Steppladder system week3

Lots of firsts for me tonight. First deer spotted from the saddle, first time stomped at, first time hearing some fights in the woods, and first time being blown at by a doe. Passed on the first two and didn’t see the bigger one behind the tree. Had em dead to rights but didn’t feel right so I...

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

Rgr that. Taking my time I usually have my stand set and in the tree in about 30 mins. Provided I don’t bone head anything and have to re do something. Had to re set a couple stepps this weekend and didn’t follow my steps so it took some extra time.

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

Read a lot of your posts. Do you leave your stepps in place in the field and go back to them or set up and take down each time?

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

Love em so far, just not 100% on my skills just yet. Rather err on the safe side until I am.

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

That’s what kinda what I was thinking. Set the stepp, move the tether, flip lineman’s belt and move up. Take out the slack with the Ropeman set the next stepp. Etc. Reckon I could get 2 stepps for each tether move if I don’t use the aider that is. My shifts stepp I’m sure was poor technique as...

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

Just realized what you meant, sorry I’m a bit slow today. Yeah I do the same thing.

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

Yeah I had a stepp kick out from me with a center connection in a rock harness but it stopped me since it was a closed loop. Figured I could just move my tether up as I advanced up the tree. Like a repelling figure 8? Trying to picture that.

    2nd time kestrel/stepp system

So today was my 2nd live run with my kestrel and stepp system. Great kit! Other than a couple little planning and dexterity foul ups. Can’t say I’m 100% with stepp technique yet but I’m getting better. Saddle was perfect. But! Whilst climbing I got to thinking, will the lineman’s belt arrest a...

    Hello from Iowa

Over in Davenport. Got to try out the kestrel yesterday and work with my stepps. Learned a lot in 5 hours. All the tips helped as well.

    Question for veteran hunters

That was my plan. Set up my stepps about waist high and set up a platform with them to work on that technique then shoot a bit from there like you guys were saying. Then I’m just a step down for any adjustments.

    Question for veteran hunters

Get this. My cousin calls and tells me those monsters are tearing up his trees (where I practice shooting and climbing) and wants them gone! Sent me where they move and bed. Right next to the tree I’ve been practicing and where I am going again with my new kestrel. Wouldn’t that be a hell of a...

    Question for veteran hunters

Yeah the steppladder did take a bit of practice for me as well. Getting that thump when you know it’s right. I just want to be ready. My practice spot does have 3 monsters that come through daily so maybe I’ll get lucky hahaha.
