SEP 13 for me right now - in Kansas for the next few weeks. Been out there gettin it in… passed a decent 8pt the other night, but just not quite what I’m looking for. As soon as I can find someone to take some deer meat I’ll get that doe tag filled — sucks living out of a hotel for 12 weeks.

More deer… wouldn’t necessarily call it better though. Heavily hunted. Honestly my best hunting is the annual rut trip to Ohio.

Worst thing you’ve forgot to take into the field?

I wear calf socks and will “loose” the top half of the sock sometimes… it’s a decent back up

Worst thing you’ve forgot to take into the field?

Forgot my boots once… hunted in running shoes.. forgot my release more than once… but, the worse time I was on a roughly 2 mile hike in. Made it in super tight to a buck bed… I had to sit there and watch him get up and walk by me within shooting range. Never got another opportunity on him.

    Redneck Belay Device/Tender

I’ve rappelled a bit in my life. While I’m no master, I do have some experience. 1) Using non rated gear isn’t worth your life. 2) Your quick link isn’t putting the same amount of friction an ATC or figure 8 would. It could possibly work, but you will need to use a lot more arm strength versus...

I know there is an anti-camo movement, is there an anti-black(clothing color) movement?

One other issue with his test is that he compares the garments at ground level. While I do hunt from the ground some, I would prefer to match more closely at hunting height versus at ground level. that being said, I’m not pro or anti camo. I’ve used both and have been successful with both...

    Sitka pants knee pads?

I prefer actual knee pads for longer sits. If it’s a quick hunt, I’ll just run the Sitka pads and they work fine. I do notice their thickness (or lack of) after about 10 minutes of sitting with my knees against the tree, but I mainly lean on quick hunts so no big deal to me.

I know there is an anti-camo movement, is there an anti-black(clothing color) movement?

As I do have the unfortunate perspective of a deer (I’m color blind) I can say the human outline is the human outline. It’s more about the lines than colors. Orange to a deer is actually similar to a muted grey.

Kansas City (Fort Leavenworth) Gear Try Out

I’m in the KC area (Fort Leavenworth, KS) for the next few weeks and am willing to meet up with anyone interested in trying out some saddle hunting gear and/or helping out a new saddle Hunter fine tune some things. I’ve been saddle hunting since 15-16 so I’ve tried a few different things out...

    Hunting Backpack Needs

I run the mystery ranch pack for my moose, elk, and deer hunts. It is large enough for me to carry all my needs for a 15 day back country (Metcalf) and still allows me to bring out quartered animals. I honestly love the pack and don’t envision changing any time soon. I also bought the Pintler...
