    Opening Day Gun in PA

You guys are just reminding me of why I gave up rifle hunting in PA several years ago. The only way I'd do it now would be to sit in the middle of the thickest, nastiest stuff in the county, with my bow. Most guys won't walk through that stuff. ...but I don't miss it at all. Thanks for bringing...

Bear taking a dump in my mock scrape

Here are the results from the Fawn Mortality Study the PA Game Comm. did several years back on PA public land. The difference in the bear % below is that the Quehanna Wild Area has alot more bears in it than the Penns Valley region does. Where there were a bunch of bears, they killed a bunch of...

have I overlooked bino harness as the best minimalist setup?

I have a bino harness from Rick Young Outdoors. You can't get more minimalist than this and I love how you don't have to worry about the straps twisting at all. Easy to put on in the dark. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer...

    Checking trail cameras worry

I think hunters tend to over think buck bedding areas. I think it is more a matter of them finding a place where humans and other predators (we're not the only ones they worry about) seldom venture. Add in the correct elevation, cover, wind direction, visibilty on the down wind side, and you...

    Checking trail cameras worry

You are totally screwed. Might as well abandon the area completely, just let me know where you were. :) When his testosterone starts to rise and he spends more time on his feet, I seriously doubt he will remember that a guy walked by an area one time.

    Annual fall shift

Here is a link to an interesting on-going study being done on public land deer in PA. With the GPS collars we can now see what they are doing each month. Notice how this particular buck moved in late Oct. miles away from where he was in Sept.. I don't belive hunting pressure had anything to do...

    Deer Chasing Lows

Here is an interesting article/video for anyone that's interested. This deer study has really confirmed what I've been anecdotally observing on my own. It is fun to watch how these bucks move from one month to the next. You can see how the bucks move much more in early Nov. than they do in Oct...

    Deer Chasing Lows

You've already gotten alot of good advice on here but I figured I'd throw my hat in the ring too. I've been hunting public land in PA for 40 years, it's about all I know. I've quit putting cameras out in the Summer because I've found it to be pretty useless for figuring out what bucks will hang...

    Saddle hunting boots

I just broke down and bought a pair of Crispi boots, non-insulated. I can't even believe how comfortable they are compared to any boot I've ever owned. No brake in period required, great right out of the box.

Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

Yes, but in the State Forest they only allow Class 1 ebikes. It's posted clearly on the website for each State Forest.

Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

I have a Rambo bike. To meet the requirement here in PA, you have to take off the thumb throttle switch. Then it is a Class 1 as long as it's 750 w, only going up to 20 MPH, powered by the pedals.

Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

My state only allows Class 1 ebikes, which means you still have to pedal. I guess you're some kind of purist, hope you're only using a recurve. I'm guessing you've never even been on an ebike.

Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

Yeah, come talk to me when you're over 50 and have some knee problems. Maybe hunting off the beaten path should only be for the young guys I guess.

Anyone else hunting with an E-Bike this year?

I've been using an ebike here in PA for 6 seasons. It takes the sweat out of those long walks, especially the ones up the mountain. I'm spoiled now, couldn't even think of going a mile or two back in without the bike. Good for getting gear in and out when I used to set a bunch of treestands.

    Best backpacks for saddle hunting?

Not sure how far your hikes are, but some of mine are 1-2 miles and alot are uphill. I don't even like to carry my bow in my hand for those long trips, especially when climbing. I use a sling on my bow for those types of walks and I sure don't want to be carrying sticks for an hour either. Plus...

Why not just sit in a treestand then?

    Smoked him!

Conscientiousness comes from ones' sense of conscience. Responsibility comes from ones' sense of what is responsible. Problem with those as a 'public' guideline is who's sense is 'correct' and who's is 'incorrect'? Is mine right because it comes from my own mind or is yours right because it...

    Help Me Trees

Reading over all these posts, and thinking about all the variables there are with the oak trees, the mast crops, and weather conditions, is precisely why I focus more on the bedding areas. So many times here in PA, we either have a tremendous mast crop with acorns everywhere, or years with no...

    Smoked him!

Yeah, I don't care much what others do or say, so long as they're obeying the law. If you don't like it, don't watch it. On a personal level, the only thing I remember saying or thinking when I've released an arrow is "go down, go down..." Or if I have to take up a track job, praying that I...
