Mad Rock Issue on New Rope

Yep! I consider the safeguard as a binary on/off device and not a means of controlling descent. Control should come via the brake hand.

How Much Weight Are You Carrying?

Early season, my water alone is at 11 lbs. for a long hot day in the salt marshes, and this by far overshadows any impact of nickel and diming the ounces on my climbing gear, so I don't stress too much anymore and prioritize safety. It's all a huge improvement in weight over the old climbing stands.

    Let's see those pre-sets!

Yes. For safety reasons, I always prefer a typical paracord preset over leaving my climbing rope in a tree.

    Let's see those pre-sets!

I’d be very nervous leaving my climbing rope in a tree (squirrels or anything else that could chew on or tamper with a critical piece of life safety equipment). Back when I used ladder stands, any that were left out all had their straps chewed through by the next season.

    Question

I always preferred a ratchet to the flimsy feeling riveted OCBs. However, I just started using a heavy duty OCB from Treehopper, which I’m really liking.

    EWO!

Hands down my favorite shop. They curate an inventory of only the best gear, so I always recommend them to anyone getting started in saddle hunting.

    Carbon SS Strong Enough?

I wasn't expecting to like them as much as I do. I had all the same concerns originally, but they are quiet, bite the tree well, and the attachment tabs hold strong. I will advise to wrap the attachment tabs exactly per the manufacturer, as I believe most that have had breakage had deviated from...

Going crossbow this year! Now what

If you go with an Excalibur, then you can quickly and easily remove the riser from the mainframe and pack into a small soft case. This works even with the non-takedown models. I store my bow like this all the time.

Going crossbow this year! Now what

I have a claw sling on mine, but I always go in quietly, carrying and ready to shoot. Still hunting. I probably kill half of my deer on my way in or out.

Why don't yall 2TC? - ultralight rope technique

I don't see it as "training wheels" and would have no intention of getting rid of it. Bottom line for me is safety. No amount of practice can prevent an accident and relying on a leg or arm wrapped around the tree to keep from falling as you fiddle with a loose tether is not the pinnacle of...

Why don't yall 2TC? - ultralight rope technique

Alright. I think I really like 2TC now. I never enjoyed the unstable feeling of single-foot 2TC, so I was excited to try CGM’s double foot stirrup design. I just did my first climb with it and I love it. Coupled with a lineman’s belt that I pull tight while I stand up, this feels very stable and...

    Pack in / haul out

That’s the approach I prefer as well. Here’s a good video for anyone interested:

    Pack in / haul out

For whitetail and sika, I like to bone out the deer into cotton game bags and carry it out. I’m usually an hour or more from the car each way, so multiple trips isn’t practical, but I do have a bad back, so having a pack that suits your condition is necessary.

    Hip Waders

I ordered by sneaker size and the fit is very roomy. Enough space for thick wool socks and good circulation, but a bit loose in warm weather.

    Hip Waders

For swamps, I wear Dan’s Snake Protector Froglegs w/ Dryshod Haymaker Boots. They’re flexible enough that I keep them on for the whole hunt, though these and all waders will get a little steamy in warm weather.

    Retooling My Gear

I always pack mine in, but only because I end up walking at least a couple miles in, through swamp and catbrier, and don’t want to risk damage, wear and tear, or losing something on the way in. I’m in the bad back club as well and have migrated to a lumbar pack. Honestly, most of my pack’s...

    Success from the ground

I’ve had success with whitetail and sika deer from the ground with a recurve. There’s nothing more exciting than drawing on a deer seven yards away from you at eye level. That said, I don’t often try this sort of thing early in the season and usually wait until I’ve got meat in the freezer first.

Where to buy straps for ROS?

I have one of these and I much prefer it over the usual OCBs. It gives much better leverage and is much sturdier.

No jokes. Do you crazies really saddle hunt in Crocs?

What was the name of this platform again? I remember I was interested a while back, but never pulled the trigger. How do you like it?
