    Lets talk scrapes

Start by following all the edges where the really nasty thick stuff joins to the thick stuff. Look is areas where most of the pines are not big enough to hunt out of. Most thick stuff is not homogenous. There will be little relatively open pockets and lanes here and there is a lot of that sort...

    Lets talk scrapes

Generally speaking, yes, they will be in thick cover. They will be in places where people don't go. These are spots where a big buck will feel comfortable walking around in broad daylight. Below are two pictures from last year about this time when I went in and dialed in the spot. One picture is...

    Lets talk scrapes

My observation is that the primary or community scrapes will be visited regularly by deer throughout the year but generally the focus will just be on the licking branch and not the scrape. Generally, the scrape will not be opened up and refreshed until early November.

Anyone use John Eberharts scent control methods?

He was probably "smellier" than a modern person judged by the average person living today, but he was probably more "naturally smelly" as we are probably more "industrially smelly", if that makes sense. Of the two, a deer would likely be more off put by industrially smelly than naturally smell...

Anyone use John Eberharts scent control methods?

The other thing to keep in mind with Ishi is he was hunting to eat. He wasn't hunting for sport. Sure, I'm certain he derived a lot of enjoyment out of hunting itself, but it was deadly serious business also. A subsistence hunter may go out for a deer but if they run into a raccoon or an opossum...

Anyone use John Eberharts scent control methods?

I don't know this for sure, but my feeling is that these techniques worked for him and were probably learned both from his own personal practical experience hunting for years and also from collective knowledge learned from thousands of years of experience from his ancestors. I believe Ishi was...

Anyone use John Eberharts scent control methods?

I've read that account before, and my takeaway was that Ishi used what most of us would consider a pretty hard core, diligent and well thought out scent control regimen up to and including altering his diet a day or days prior to a hunt. He was altering what he ate, what he wore and his whole...

    Standard, small, micro?

I've had Douglas Fir shafts from Surewood Shafts that I shot so much I wore the feathers off and had to refletch them. Also, every once and a while the arrow will hit something hard and break the shaft off right behind the field point. I just square off the shaft, retaper it and glue the point...

Thanks! I will definitely pass along this advice.

    2024 Turkey Thread

Congrats! I have a friend going out there in a week or so. Sounds like a blast (literally). I'll pass along the tips on hunting them to him.

    2024 Hog Hunting Thread

I've been out a couple of more times in the last week but haven't seen any more hogs. There was plenty of fresh sign here and there, but no pigs seen. I've pretty much given up on the turkeys. They are just not acting right again this year. It's not just me but several of my friends who have...

    Packable, Lightweight Waders

Wow, that's crazy. I've worked with the public before, and you get tired of it for sure but when the phone rings you just have to fake it sometimes. Being rude to potential customers is not a good business model.

    Multi pin vs one pin

Exactly. It is like sighting in a rifle like a 30-06 to be 2 inches high at 100 yards. At 20 yards it may be 2 inches low (depending on scope to bore height) and it is within the kill zone out to maybe 325 yards depending on the cartridge. It's the idea of maximum point-blank range. You can do...

    Packable, Lightweight Waders

I broke down and bought a set about 2 months ago. I haven't used them yet but I can tell I will once deer season gets here. The area I started hunting last fall has very variable water levels. Sometimes it is bone dry and sometimes you need an airboat, lol. Last fall I hunted several times in...

    Standard, small, micro?

I'm shooting these out of a 56 pound at 28 Northern Mist longbow. I need a weak spined arrow so it can snake around the riser. The bow is an ASL (American Semi Longbow) and is nowhere near center cut. I try and keep all shots with the longbow 20 yards and in, although I'd like them in that 8 to...

    Practiced more 2T/C-ing

That's awesome! By fall you will have mastered 2TC and shooting off the ring of steps. Both will be second nature.

    Turkey pacseat for deer hunting?

I've got one very similar to that one that I rescued after a friend of mine chunked it in the bushes after a rivet broke. I took it home, fixed it and I have been using it for years with only occasional repairs. I prefer a very low chair like that for turkeys since I use a shotgun for them. I've...

    Turkey pacseat for deer hunting?

I'll probably end up with one myself. I really like hunting off the ground now. I won't completely give up hunting out of the saddle because some of my prime spots warrant it but the simplicity, safety and ease of using the Packseat is hard to beat.

    Turkey pacseat for deer hunting?

I don't own one, but those videos did make my wallet nervous for a while, lol. I was sort of surprised by the size difference since I had seen some reviews on here that seemed to indicate that there was not too much size difference. I'll be interested to see what you think. I love the full size...
