Trying anything new this year? Equipment or strategies?

This year I'm going to try climbing spurs and hunt some new areas attempting to be a little more aggressive in my tree location. My plan is to go in a little earlier, take my time a little more getting in my tree making sure I'm as quiet as I can be. We will see what happens!

Headlamp, Flashlight Or Nothing At All?

I voted for no light because I try my best to not use one and that option seemed to fit me best. I guess I kinda feel like its a little bit of a failure on my part if I have to use it... not totally sure why but that's how I feel. I always have one on me though but use it as little as possible.

    ROS vs Platform

Seeing that I don't own a platform, my answer is definitely ROS. I'd like to try the platform one day to compare but the steps work fine.

How high do you like to climb

20-25 is my sweet spot. At times, I may go higher but heights are not my favorite and I also don't feel like I'm where i need to be if Ii'm below that either

What is your favorite part of deer hunting?

There is so much that I love and enjoy about each step of the process but the moment of truth may be the biggest for me with tracking as a close second. Now that my boys are getting a little older (ages 3 and 5) any part of it i can involve them in is now becoming my favorite. They are too...

Poll - What size tree do you prefer to climb for saddle hunting?

The location is more important to me than the tree, it was one of the reasons I moved to the saddle to have that flexibility. 13-17 was what I selected but I've been in bigger than that and don't really mind it. I'm not a huge fan of a small tree swaying because of my movement but get me in the...

What common SH accessory don't you use?

Backband and knee pads. I have them, just don't use them or need them

    Just ordered first saddle...

Welcome to the forum! I joined last year and the benefits of hunting from the saddle are night and day in my opinion. I have zero interest in going back to my climbers again.

    Walking with saddle on question

I have the kestrel and walk in with it on. The less I have to mess with in the woods close to where I'm hunting, the better. There have been no issues for me with it loosening up or sagging. I'm also not worried about the durability of it or sturdiness... it's built to handle more than I will...

    Leaners and Knee Pads

First season hunting from the saddle so I've done a little bit of both leaning and knees on the trees until I figured out what I liked best. At this point, I have found I'm mostly a leaner and I still wear my knee pads for the short amount of time I do put my knees on the tree.

    Approximate time for setup.

This is a good thread. As it is my first season hunting in the saddle, I was wondering the same thing about the amount of time it took others to get set up. Obviously, getting in familiar trees/locations made the process much quicker for me but I wondered about the run and gun approach and how...

    The learning curve...

I know the feeling! Good luck to you this season as well. I will have to put my first hunt out of the saddle on hold for another week. The weather here where I hunt won't be good this weekend for the opener so I will have to wait.
