2018 Live from the saddle....

Alright had a fun hunt tonight! Saw my first 2 bucks of the season. Had 3 chances to shoot a 75" that I think was a 3.5 year old. He was a very pretty deer just not much of a rack. Too early in the season so he got a pass. Also I got into a stand off with a big snapping turtle in the creek I was walking to my spot. He won when he turned around a stood his ground and stared me down lol.

That turtle would eat a lot better than deer meat! Just saying.

8’ off the ground covered up in a bush. Beautiful overcast evening with a slight breath of north wind. Acorns to my left and right, clover and soybeans over my left shoulder and corn over my right. A hungry deer smorgasbord. The island in the pic holds bedded deer as does the transition leading to it. Decided to sit back here close to the food to see what happens.

25’ up and ready for a deer to walk by!
I borrowed @Scoutman ‘s canoe and crossed some water to a patch of oaks on an isolated peninsula. Should be the only acorns within a mile or so. There’s not a great crop this year, but there are a few.

Gotta love to hunt from a boat. Good luck!

Well, not good news. The arrow was clean. I had to have shot under her.

I grid searched her escape path, but no blood. At least it was a clean miss and not a wounded deer.
It was a weak side shot leaned out as far as my tether would let me, so I should have just held off. It was my last chance at her before she was in thick cover, and I rushed it.

Kinda ticked at myself, but I’m back in the tree.

Not exactly live but we went on a youth hunt this weekend. My sons first hunt from a saddle. I’m beginning to think I’ve forgotten how to deer hunt. That’s like seven sits this season and haven’t seen the first deer from a tree this year. 80BD5EF6-0482-4717-AE65-ABE9CEB61AB7.jpeg
He didn’t spend all weekend in the saddle and still thinks the millennium is more comfortable. Since he was the only one snoring I wouldn’t argue with him. So for now he can choose but if he wants to sit in the millennium he has to carry it. 869C471C-AF08-48A4-A540-C0EAF92EE6CE.jpeg

Passed on the doe.. She had a little one with her that still had a few spots.

Nice!
I had an eventful Oklahoma opener as well.
Missed a doe, and had pigs within 120 yards from 11:00am-dark. The pigs REALLY tested my resolve because I had two spend about 20 minutes right below me. A 60lb youngun and a big old sow. But, as much as I would have loved to have the meat, my out of state deer archery only tag doesn’t allow me to shoot pigs....

Edit:
I don’t actually self-film, but I stitched these clips together using a free app on my phone.

Nice start!

FYI- the last time I pig hunted in OK they didn’t require a special license, just a ferrel pig permit. I think it’s like $25. It sounds like you might check into that!

1 1/2 days hard hunting/scouting. Had to back off Monday morning As swirling winds kept me from getting into the stand I wanted to hunt. Spent the mid day scouting and overlook bedding area and jump to nice bucks that I will set up on come November. How did this morning but the Mosquitoes were the only thing to show up. I think this heat has them bedding early and for most of the day.

Sitting about 18 feet up. 7 stepps total-two for a small platform. Knaider only today. No deer or turkey…yet. Team 6 really needs some points. Stay safe out there saddlehunters.
