2023 Turkey Hunting Thread

And for the love of all things Holy; please stop talking about where you killed turkeys, stop supporting folks who are whoring out the resource and stop rushing to IG, FB and the like to post a kill pic.

There. I’m about done now

Who else is going archery tackle? @woodsdog2 ?

I finally got out this morning, missed the opener Saturday but it was worth it to spend time with an old friend.

Got a later start but beat someone to the parking spot. Got in my spot, set my dekes clucked a few times threw a couple newly learned purrs into the world and got comfortable. About 30-35 mintutes in a Jake came in quick. Glad he made some noise or he'd have had me totally off guard. He came right into my dekes at 10 yds but I couldn't get my bow up or drawn ( compound, I'm honestly over bowed right now but unforeseen delays getting a new rig ready made me choose to leave it). He ran out as fast as he came in when I snapped a twig trying to get into better position. He came in to my left, I'd set up for a tiny opening to my right. He came in quick and got suspicious quick. Not sure if he'd made me already or just didn't trust my plastic lady and funky chicken (on loan from a friend).

In my second year as a hunter, mostly solo, I'm happy to have had that experience! Thrilling! Shot gun he'd have been done! But looking to be bow only just because.

Good luck!

Yep I’m doing archery only on the private I hunt. I’ve been doing it that way for three years now exclusively so they don’t get pressured. I like it as I look at it kind of like deer hunting for turkeys. It’s crazy how they can ignore you all morning and then come right by. But on public I look forward to doing some run and gunning and scouting for this fall too.

Yeah we discussed the population explosion and subsequent numbers correction of reintroduced animals in the podcast. What’s making Wisconsin and some other northern states different is that their population “correction” is much less dramatic than many other states currently in crisis. Wisconsins population has now stabilized below the numbers from 10 years ago with no signs of continued decline at a statewide level.

On the other side, strong populations, high hunter success rates, and a target rich environment seems like anything but the beginnning of a problem.:tearsofjoy:
A consideration you and other northern states may not be facing that we face down here is cold spring rains post hatch. Not sure of your hatch times but suspect the type of weather I am talking about where we get cold rain, you guys would get a snow. Not entirely sure but again suspect it is easier for a poult to stay dry in a snow event rather than a rain event. We can and have nearly lost entire hatches due to cold rainy periods post hatch. Flooding is another significant problem in the delta from nest laying to pre-flight we can lose a spring if the rivers flood.

Oh we get them up here aplenty as well. Unfortunately, we get wet snow rain mix sometimes up through early to late May if not later.

@BTaylor whats your issues with Chamberlan? I’ve listened to him on a couple of podcasts and he seems knowledgeable and an avid turkey hunter himself. Curious to what you know or have heard and I have not. PM me if you’d rather. Always appreciate your insight.
An example would be his insistence that the nesting date for southeastern turkeys is April 17. Doesnt matter whether you are talking GA turkeys or MS and AR, nesting date is April 17. That's like saying all deer in the southeast breed on Nov 29th. 100% of his credibility went out the window of a truck doing 95 when he said that. Our biologist that studied under him claims the same thing for here in AR even though he has only been here in the state for 3-4 years. Contrary to the fact that he has been told by multiple people from all over the state who have hunted turkeys here for 25 or more years that they nest well before then. He has been show video of hens with hatched poults by that date more than once. The answers so far have been to push the season dates back and they have gone to a rule where you if you kill a bird in the first week you cant shoot your second bird until the second week. That rule is based on their argument that it takes a couple weeks for dominance to be reestablished if you shoot a gobbler, meaning hens wont be bred. Sure ok. There is a plenty more like the use of turkey litter for fertilizer is spreading disease and killing off the birds. Between state and federal we have prolly 4-5 million acres that arent having chicken litter spread on them and the populations are not better to much worse there than they are on the private ground where litter is being used. Why are we not talking about management on smaller scales like county or at least smaller zones? Why are we not talking about going to a draw to limit take? Why are we not having discussions about how to address all of the issues effecting turkeys on private and public that we have some measure of control over and ways to build public/private synergy? Aside from all of that Chamberlain comes across to me as the turkey version of James Kroll, more concerned with building his brand than actual field results.

We are north of 30 inches of rain since the first of the year, we need that to ease up or this years recruitment may not be great.

I had a good long chat with a GW in a delta county year before last and he said they used to have a lot of birds, but now they don’t even bother checking turkey hunters. Said he’d only laid eyes on 3 dead birds in the 2 years before that.
I remember when you could hear 30-50 gobblers in a morning on 1k acres in the riverbottoms. Populations were unsustainably high at that point but went to dang near none and stayed way low for the last 20+ years.

Had one hell of a hunt yesterday morning with a good friend of mine. Had three longbeards fired up with the wingbone call. Just couldn't get them to cross the fence to our side. It was cool enough and the sun behind them you could see their breath. At one point they all gobbled in unison. That image will stick with me for a while. Really made we wish that I had a good video camera for that shot.

Ok, well, I finally got one to fire up this morning and sealed the deal. I went up to some land I have permission on that is mostly pasture land and scrub pines. I heard him sound off on the roost in some pines just after daylight and had one heck of a time getting around to where I could start working him due to the openness of the terrain. He gobbled about 5 times after I set up and then went silent. I figured he had met up with hens and just started soft clucking to keep him interested. Sure enough, about 20 minutes later he gobbled again but this time from a field corner to my 9 o'clock. He had sort of circled around. I left my chair and belly crawled over and set up against a tree. I called to him and this time he gobbled and cut me off. He was headed my way. When he got to about 30 yards and popped up on a little rise I Iet the TSS do its thing. This will likely be it for me this season. It's been a tough season with very little gobbling.

Nice job! Congrats!! Looks like some decent spurs on him too!!

Had a bird poached a couple of sundays ago. The jackwagon thought it would be a good idea to zip tie the fan to a hanger, and hang it on the gate.
Looks like he forgot one.

Do birds ever come back in, like a deer will sometimes?

had 2 Jake's. Total little birds but had one at probably 10 and one at about 15. I got a half 3/4 drawn... had my finger over the arrow and popped it off the string. The busted me trying to let down

Getting closer but that clock is a ticking! Very exciting!!
