2024 Hog Hunting Thread

I know nothing about hog hunting as we don’t have them up here. Why don’t you use rifled slugs? Just curious. Before centerfire rifles were legalized for deer, we had some pretty tricked out sluggers that could reach out.
It's mostly a regulation thing. You can shoot them with whatever on private land 24/7/365. If you have a 50 BMG, go right ahead, lol. It's legal. On public land you have to hunt them during an open season for other game (incidentally as they put it) and it has to be with a weapon and load legal for that season. That eliminates the ability to legally use a slug during squirrel season but #2 might be fine. I know #2 is fine during turkey season but anything bigger is illegal. Each state may have different regulations. You just have to see what your state or particular WMA allows and work with what you have.

I'm sorry to temp you. I went back and forth and ended up ordering the Gumleaf. I end up using the Lacrossa and Gumleaf about 50/50. I know what you mean about having that little bit of extra length. I overtopped both these boots scouting last year about this time. If you don't own a boot dryer, let me tell you, they are the best thing since sliced bread. I will not go without having a boot dryer.

I also carry hip waders in the truck and chest waders. A couple of my spots are chest wader only. Hip waders will not cut it. The bad thing about those is they are not really packable, and the hip waders are bearable but have cheap boots on them, and the chest waders are heavy, hot and noisy and suffer from the same cheap boot bottoms. They are not comfortable to walk any distance in. I'm seriously considering some Wiggys Waders.
It doesn't take much tempting believe me.
My buddy has the Wiggy's and on deeper holes we toss them back and forth until all 3 of us are across. They are great and very packable. When I went to order them last year there was some sort of on-line issue and I never got back around to ordering a pair.

this. same in La...ive never understood why they complain so much about the feral hog population with a population of willing hunters. Give us a small season between the spring turkey or something to go in there with more than a 22 and put some hogs in the dirt.

I said this in another thread, but I wish the state would offer a year-round archery only public land hog permit. It would basically be no different than what they allow private landowners to do minus the rifles. Bow only would be much less impact to wildlife, and you would only have serious people buying the permits. Make the permits $300 to $500 and I'd buy one every year.

Same in Oklahoma. Coyote season is forever, and about anything is legal.

Legally, for us in MS, coyotes are lumped into the same nuisance animal category as hogs so you can only hunt coyotes on public land the same as hogs, during an open season on game animals, with weapons and loads for that season only. On private it is anything goes 24/7/365 for nuisance animals.

That sucks, and it's surprising. Biggest problem here is there's not near enough public land. The pressure especially during deer season is tough anywhere near Tulsa or OKC. Some of the guys I work with go a little further and find hogs with dogs about every weekend.

I've got feeders on property near Henryetta, I get pigs pretty often, but they don't pattern very well. First kill from the saddle was a big boar down there last June with a rifle. My goal is to stick one with the bow this spring.

Yeah, every state has its quirks and problems to overcome. I think a lot of our regulations boil down to the state not wanting game wardens to have to patrol public land in the summer months freeing them up to be after the boaters and fishermen. That leaves the hogs, coyotes, etc. free reign for about 6 months a year.

I need to find some private land to hunt them on for that 6 month down time. I've considered getting back in that hunting lease I was in just for the hogs and turkeys.

you would think a lease group would pay you a bounty per hog. yawt yawt pays his way onto a lease by trapping X hogs/year

There might be some but so far, I haven't talked to anyone who would go for it. I'm always talking to people though. Clubs around here have some peculiar rules even for members. If you are an outsider and not a member it is very hard to get in. I talked to my old club's president (dictator, lol) last year and he said they were trying to trap them and then I ran into his grandson about a week later and we were talking, and he laughed and told me they weren't catching any...they were too lazy to bait the traps and check them.

I was looking through some old pics and found this one of those hogs I was hunting on the old club. I hunted them all year round.

Some leases do but not many. I had a similar deal for a couple years, full membership on a 3000 acre lease in exchange for shooting and trapping hogs, coyotes and coons. That deal ended once other members decided it was fun to shoot them, don’t get me wrong it’s fun but I was taking out a couple hundred a year versus their 20-30. Some people just like having more opportunities at “extra” game

State trappers flew the helicopter 3 or 4 square miles surrounding me. Over 200 confirmed kills.
Found a little 5lb piglet wandering my pasture alone.

Anybody bait? Hog slop? Fermented corn and jello

Family put out some plain corn yesterday and we hunt Thursday. Suggestions on using more bait? Place to put hog slop? Same place as other corn? Deeper in woods?
