2024 Off-Season Getting/Staying In Shape Motivation Thread

I do like some of the features on the instinct but I'm not a big bulky watch guy.

What in particular do you like better?

I gave some halfway serious thoughts to buying a standing (convertible) desk and a walking treadmill for my "home office" (corner of my bedroom) to get some more (walking) miles in while I work. Looks like it's about 400-450 dollars minimum though so I'm sticking with the sitting in a chair and taking breaks to go walk around a bit for now.
Look on FB marketplace, there’s loads from folks dumping them after covid having to report back to the office. I’m currently shopping for one.

This year I’m changing up my training. Still getting in the gym but not throwing weight around like I used too. I find as I get older combined with a beat up body I’m starting to get muscle imbalances no matter how hard I try - some muscles just respond quicker. I’m starting on the Bioneers super functional system which is more geared towards functional fitness and strength, perfect for saddle hunters. The wife and I are also cutting out processed food as much as possible and I made the difficult decision to quit drinking beer. I love beer but man it puts weight on me like nothing else plus it causes me to bloat like a bullfrog. Having two school aged children who are extremely active we’re going to be meal prepping which also helps us cut down on splurge shopping on junk. Our kids like eating healthy anyway so that’s a bonus.

Mainly battery life/not having to recharge every week. The solar actually makes a difference to me during the summer (and that was on the old one, the 2x is even better apparently) I don't need the flashy full color face.

That's certainly not farting around.
Seriously lol. @GreginPA is leaving us in the dust. Good choice of words though, I did 4 miles of fartleks yesterday, bouncing back and forth between 10:30-11 and 7:45-8 every half mile and I was wiped. It's gonna be a few more months/years until I'm back in the shape I want to be, but progress is progress.

Today/tomorrow are going to be easy days in advance of long runs this weekend

appreciate the encouragement. I've really enjoyed learning how to run these last few years, sounds silly to say that but it's true. I never ran a day in my life before 2020.

I just hired a run coach for the 1/2 marathon I'm doing in March. It's weird, they keep telling me to run slower and less often. I'm listening, for now.

Tomorrow I'm supposed to rest all day, but I'm going to at least take a walk. Saturday I'm scheduled to run 13. 2 easy, 10x1 alternating sub 7:30 and no faster 8:30 paces, and finish with an easy mile.

hit me up on Strava via that link I posted if any of you are on it.

@GreginPA I’m not saying don’t listen to a coach or not to do anything you’re doing, you’re doing great. Just sharing because your attitude towards learning is super positive, the book is good, and the story of the class itself is interesting. Maybe it’ll be good for someone on the board, never know.

understandable. its easier to run slow when youre out of shape (like me), but i'm trying to beleive in the 80/20 rule and all that stuff, basicakky heeping effort/ heart rate down on easy days so that you can hit it even harder on hard days. it's making some sense so far but i'm only about two monthsinto the return to running, so time will tell. do you have a time goal for the half? 1:30?

I quit drinking, quit eating breakfast, and went back to drinking my coffee black. Never have been a big sweets eater, and I've been really trying hard to get the old 5-a-day.

Honestly have no idea how I'm going to exercise now between job and kiddo, and I can't hunt every day like I used to could. Gonna be a rough year. Thinking about hitting some of the local trailer trash up for some Marlboros and crystal meth. Seems to keep them pretty slim and energetic.
1st thing in the morning is the best time

That said I rarely accomplish that. But I have 16 month old and a two day old and still manage to get at least 4 days, more often 5, simply because my wife knows how important it is to me. I really need to do the morning thing though, especially with two now.

I was 260 lbs big boobs disgusting fat my whole life up until the end of college. From the end of college till about 4 years ago I was a constant yo yo dieter. lose 30lbs, gain 25, lose 10, gain 15 etc. I think the only person that ever clicked with me and I learned from is David Goggins. Because he explained nothing is easy for him. He has the most hardcore discipline you've ever seen in a human and he hates nearly all the exercises he does. Exercising and eating clean NEVER gets easier for me. It's a struggle every single day. I hate exercise. I like foods that are bad for you. You have to do the things you hate to do to grow as a person and get better. I look good. Im lean. And I still hate going to the gym. Nobody is coming to help you get fit. You, and only you can hold yourself accountable.

Named my dog Jocko for the same reason.

Big goal for this year is to lean out. Currently at 195, wouldn’t mind getting to a lean 175-180

Use Human Predator Pack Mule for my training and love it. It’s pricey but completely worth it IMO. Did MTNTough before that and just kept getting burnt out on it. Normal week is 2 days of significant strength training, one day of recovery strength work, one day of mid-high intensity cardio then 1-2 days of zone 2 cardio, which is typically rucking for me.

Going to try and work up to 10,000 steps a day too. Have a sedentary job so that’s going to take some commitment to the cause.

I work from home right now, totally sedentary so I get you. If you want to get to a step goal get up an hour earlier and go walk for 45 minutes. You’ll hit your step goal and feel better all day.

yeah it's a good rule. it's just a new concept for me, where until very recently I was just always running as long and fast as possible any given day. I ran my first half in September and I finished at 1:52. this was the first time I ever ran more than 10 miles too. Now, I run 10-13 nearly every Saturday. So I've increased my fitness a lot in the last few months. I told my coach my goal was 1:45. They seem to think I can do 1:35. I'm not certain. But I'm excited that even if I do 1:45 I'm shaving 7 minutes off a time that will have only been 6 months ago.

the book is good, and the story of the class itself is interesting.
thanks I'll check it out.

I have a sedentary job too. I do prefer to run in the morning. But taking a mid day walk or exercise break really helps. I started by walking and gradually started to run. Went from 230 in December 2019 to 165 currently. Reducing beer intake really helped too.

My best piece of advice is to find a running partner or two (who is faster than you).

I’m in my mid fifties and am in better shape now than I was ten years ago both physically and spiritually. My wife and I started E2M a year and a half ago and started off again into the new year into our first round for this year. This program involves an exercise and eating program. Before that I was doing keto/carnivore. Every other day we do 5, five minute cardio /strength circuits. Off days are 45 minutes of cardio whatever you want.

Besides that I scout/hunt/trap/bike/do firewood as it’s our primary form of home heating. It also provides an excellent workout. I try to split all chunks in the 15 inch and less range with a maul if possible (not too knotty).
In my thirties I ran a lot(nothing formal or organized) and have always enjoyed biking but again, I’m not one to get into groups and all that too much. I’m also not a gym person.

Mental/Spiritual fitness I enjoy the challenges at work at the same time that I loath them. I do think they keep our mind somewhat limber. My faith is important to me and am involved in a great Men’s Bible study which involves reading and studying about not only books of the Bible but also Christian and non Christian books that involve faith. Currently we are studying CS Lewis’s “Mere Christianity” which was written based on radio interviews he did on the bbc after WWII. For those who struggle with faith or have doubts as we all sometimes do, I would say this is a great book to augment your biblical reading.

Oh yes, and I still try to do 100
pushups a day.

Yesterday was just an eliptical workout. First 10 minutes at 50% resistance and a 145-150 stride/min pace. Second 10 was 1 minute intervals at 50% and 75% alternating resistance at a 140-145 pace. Last 5 was 40% resistance at a 130 pace as a sort of wind down. We normally keep workouts in the 30-45 minute range but pulled up a little short of that yesterday lol.
