Anybody tried to do this? I already climb with my rappel rope with excess in dump pouch, why not use the bottom as my “foot loop”
Thoughts and opinions?
Thanks

Probably would work. I guess you could use an Alpine Butterfly to girth hitch the tree for your foot loop end. Maybe have a separate foot loop to a ropeman or hitch connected near the bottom of the main line so you have some adjustability. Interesting idea.

I honestly have thought about this, mainly to keep it in the toolbox as an emergency option. Don’t see any reason why you couldn’t. I would say, have a sewn loop of accessory cord you could make a quick friction hitch with to then attach it to a foot loop of some sort for the adjustability. You would need a loop on the end you could tie around the running end of the rope or have another quick link type attachment.

Up
Alpine butterfly for the girth hitch, and then a Blake’s hitch on the end for the adjustable footloop.
Will try this tomorrow!

Rope management proved to be pretty difficult.

I don’t know that being able to climb without carrying another tether is worth it.

possible? Yes. Worth it or practical? Ehh not for me.

I’ve done it before and it definitely works. Like others have said rope management gets a little wonky. I prefer two tethers for climbing and a separate length of 8mm rope for rappel.

The way this goes stellar is if you can find a quick detatch for the girth hitch for the bottom tether. You could climb using a munter and then at any point rappel out by quick detaching the lower tether girth hitch. Best of all methods.

The Maverick Hitch from JRB might be a good option for this.

I had a similar thought, use an alpine butterfly and Blake's hitch to improvise an upper rope grab for a RADS SRT climb. Rope management would probably be a hassle but if you had to get up the tree to retrieve something or whatever you've got options. Wouldn't be my plan A but good to have plans C-Z.
