I've done it a couple of times and wasn't horrible. I think I may subject myself to a butt kicking this coming weekend at Farmers Sportsman's Club in NJ.

I would try 3D if there were a course close by. I have to do the Au natural version called stump shooting. I'm sure I would get my butt kicked also but it would likely be fun.

Over the last two summers all of the bag targets were replaced with 3d targets every time I found one on sale. I think I have ten 3d targets now scattered around a 2 acre patch of Hemlocks in front of my house. I shoot it almost daily through the summer.

I used to shoot 3D regular but it was always with a friend of mine that used to be sponsored so you can guess how that went for me. I did shoot better and never lost a deer in seasons that I routinely shot 3D so I highly recommend it for any bow hunter.

I love 3D and shoot somewhere almost every weekend. We are fortunate enough to have 3 clubs within 45 minutes of my house and I have a half range of targets at home also. Outside of bow hunting, I'd say it's my main hobby and it will do nothing but help you as a hunter. It is as bad as saddle hunting in relation to having 4000 gadgets to get it done though so BEWARE!!
Edit: Just realized the OP was speaking of trad bows and 3D.......Still very fun and great practice. I have a recurve and anytime I get to thinking I'm to good with my compound, I get the recurve out and it humbles me very quickly!!

3D can be addicting and lots of fun at the same time. 
I like to use the 3D courses as a "measuring stick", to see how well I'm shooting, before the hunting seasons. As the summer goes, I feel that I should be improving to the point that my scores reflect it.
An example would be: My shooting score should be as good as the guys that are shooting compound bows. The traditional shooting classes' shooting stakes are closer to the targets and therefore (in my opinion) the shooting scores should be comparable. There's always room for improvement.

I did one 3-D charity tournament called bullseyes for badges. I was the only trad bow in a sea of compounds. I didn’t win but I also didn’t get last place though. Individually didn’t do that bad and my teams score was pretty good. I did attract a ton of spectators because I was shooting a recurve with home made arrows. It was incredibly fun but the distances were a bit longer than I normally would shoot. I used to have access to a free course on a wildlife refuge and would shoot that one pretty regularly. I absolutely love 3-D. Never done a trad only tourney but have been itching to do one.
I have thought about attending the Howard Hill Classic in Tannehill, AL. Something has come up the last couple of years every time I start looking into it seriously. Maybe one day.
I help setup the Farmers course (have been since 1991) don't be afraid to shoot from where you feel comfortable.
Unless you are going to shoot in the championship, your score card is your own business.
I set the traditional stakes at realistic distances, max, no greater than 25yds.
We try to make it interesting, shoot between trees, under and over branches etc.
Don't forget to stop at the clubhouse after for "libations" and food.....
I joined a 3D club recently to challenge myself to be hunt ready with a recurve next season ( and not alternate to a compound or xbow ). It’s been a great way to get out of the house and the course is quiet on cold days.
The anxiety of losing a $10+ arrow is a good stand in for hunt nerves.
