8mm Rope Lineman’s Belt?

Anybody running 8mm rope for a lineman’s belt? Trying to make it more compact and stowable than the 11mm I’ve been using.

Another issue is the Ropeman 2. The teeth on that thing catch and pull the sheath on the rope. I have to be real gentle and deliberate to not have it snag and pull when loosening.

I tried the Ropeman 1 on it in my basement to test it. It’s rated for 10mm and higher so I’m not sure I want to trust it even through it looks like it’ll work perfectly fine.

Thoughts?

I don't run 8mm yet. I think Greg Staggs was running sterling oplux tactical rope, and I believe Wild Edge just came out with some pre-spliced 8mm ropes for tethers and lineman's belts. I am not taking the plunge to 8mm just yet, so I haven't looked past those two options.
 
This is just opinion based on one personal experience:

A lineman's belt is not designed to stop you if you are falling. It allows you to use 2 hands and it may prevent you from falling, but once you're falling don't count on the LB to stop you. I once was stepping onto my second LW stick and hadn't set the versa button correctly. The second step fell as I was setting my weight on it. I had the LB on and was leaning into it. I went straight down to the bottom.

So, if I'm correct, you aren't relying on your LB to stop a fall. 8mm is more than strong enough to bear your weight while you are using the LB to stand or work with both hands.

He didn't mention that this part hurts like hell btw.. I did this with some of that river silt on my boots. For those unaware, that is slicker than greased owl snot.

I’m gonna go with 9mm ultra tech

Ropeman1 will work with it fine

With 8mm I’d probably go with a Ropeman2 but don’t like the potential of chewing up the rope with it

I use 8mm with a Ropeman 1 for my lineman’s, no slippage at all. Since it’s not a fall arrest and doesn’t hold my entire weight, I’m not worried about it. Works great for me.

I also rigged up a 6mm prusik with a tender on the 8mm rope, about $20 total. Works pretty slick.

I made a lineman's belt and tether from 8mm rope with a Tibloc instead of a Ropeman. The 11mm I had been using weighed 2 lbs for the pair with caribiners. The 8mm ones weigh 1 lb for the pair. I havent tried them yet but will this week. They are both 11 feet, longer than the 11mm ones I was using.
