8mm vs 9mm for Tether

I have some that 8mm GM climbing rope. Use it for my bridge and rope mods on my sticks. It's pretty decent rope. I also use their 6mm for my prusiks. However, I just got some 3/8 Sterling HTP, and that stuff is way nicer than the GM rope. If I were you, I'd sacrifice the extra size, and get the better rope. Just the way it feels in my hands is worth more to me. Just wish it could be spliced.

I'm a big fan of the 3/8 sterling HTP as well, and if you choose to use a ropeman1 3/8's is just bout 10mm which is the minimum rope size for the ropeman1.

Let me start by saying I am just a dude on the internet. Do your own research. I wouldn’t buy any rope off amazon and use as a tether. I have used Sterling HTP 9mm as my tether and a kong duck. Went this way after a conversation with @Squirrels. I have since gone with Sterling Oplux 8mm. I have spoken with Sterling on the phone about using it as a tether to hang from. They gave the green light as long as I was using an appropriate rated ascender.

Oplux is easy enough to find via google etc. It's just not cheap. 175-180 for 100 ft and shorter lengths not readily available.

Are you climbing with it or just rapelling? Do you notice the stretch (a lot more than htp)?

Samson has an 8mm static ultra tech or similar.

8mm gets outside of spec for many devices also.

Less stretch than HTP. That’s from Sterling. KONG Duck, Ropeman 2 and CT Rollnlock are all rated down to 8mm.

9mm htp is .8% elongation at 300 lb
8mm oplux is 3.3% elongation at 300 lb
That's from sterling.

My device concern is mostly with devices like lifeguard/safeguard/grigri for RADS srt purposes (although you can make a few changes and get certified devices easily enough i guess). The extra stretch i wonder how much it matters.

If you have actual different info from sterling contrary to their published specs I'd be very interested.

I stand corrected. I talked to a guy at Sterling.

Some oplux/canyonlux testing - of great interest is that he is testing with a prototype "springless lifeguard" aka safeguard.
