I have added the Covering Ground retractable aiders to my skeletor sticks and don't have a major issue with them on the way up the tree but coming down it can be a little bit of a pain to get your boot in the aider, since it is so close to the tree. Anyone have any tips or ideas to keep the rope away from the tree a little or make it easier to get your foot in it on the way down.

I find most aiders are like that. Maybe besides wire aiders. Just something you have to get used to of you want to use short sticks. Once you get a system its not bad. Or just rapel down. I have same sticks. Been using leverage sticks for years and the skelators are better.

I use the aiders going up but I have modified my tether as a short rappel rope using the Madrock Safeguard. Instead of rappelling all the way down and carrying all that extra rope, I let my self down to the next hard step on the sticks so I don’t have to use the aiders. Then remove stick and let my self down to the next one. Use you linesman’s belt to hold you in place while you lower the tether. You can use a short piece of dynaglide or whatever rope to break the girth hitch on tether to lower. Good luck!
