All Repelling??

Just like the saddle I tried it from one stick high until I got comfortable. I’ve got to say I really liked the Safeguard until I got a Grigri+. The Grigri is so much smoother.

I don’t think people understand how smooth the gri gri is! It’s awesome

I was wondering approximately hours of practice did take for you to get comfortable with repelling down the tree? I plan on practicing in the spring.
I use a belay device on a secondary short bridge. Below that is a prussik hooked to a lineman’s loop for a brake so I can hang hands free. I went down my basement stairs first two times as I had never rappelled. Then from the top of maybe one stick. Seriously within two hours you can’t back to the top fast enough to do it again!

My answer to a lot of questions is: It depends! … on how high I’m climbing, what kind of tree and with what method. But, about 95% of the times, I back up my tether with my rappel rope, 5% using the lineman’s as second tether. I’m more comfortable having a backup at 20-25 ft, so why not using a rappel rope? Regardless the climbing method, it’s already set when it’s time to go home after dark and therefore, simple and easy. Most importantly, I feel safe!

I bought the original GriGri and its fantastic for the rappel. Extremely smooth however it’s terrible to use for climbing as it opens up immediately when pressure is let off. Is the GriGri+ any different?

I just got it this week and I've used it three times. I didn't notice it with C-lV Cannyon Rope. I did notice when I used it with Predator Rope and got to height if I took weight off it would slide. I just attached a Cong Duck above it and took it off when I rappelled.

The gri gri plus has an automatic breaking feature. It locks immediately when the level is released. It climbs very smoothly. I place a hand ascender with a small SMC pulley above the gri gri, With that pulley leverage is so easy that I climb without any foot loops of knee ascenders. You just have to remember with a gri gri or a gri gri plus that you hook it up on the high side of the picture because you’re the one coming down and your own hand is the “belay person side” if you hook it up the other way it will slide both directions.

Fl Canopy Stalker Ok, help me here. My understanding is that the Safeguard is the Lifeguard with spring removed so that it always grabs the rope without slipping, right? Does the gri gri + work like that also?

They all slide if the weight is removed from them but I climb it using my predator rope all the time and never had it slide down on me while it’s weighted. Now if you are on the platform using it as your tether and you stand up with a little slack it can slide down slowly because it’s not weighted, mad rock and birdies will do that too when unweighted. I am kind of like you, except I usually switch to my tether with a prusik at height. I leave my climbing rope attached, hook the carabiner from my gri gri to my gear strap (on the back side of the tree, pull the slack up and set it in my back pack also hung in the back side of the tree. Everything is up and neatly out of the way. When I want to get down I just lower my climbing rope back down, hook my carabiner from my gri gri back to my bridge, weigh it to see if it holds, remove my tether and I’m headed down. Sometimes I use the end of my rope as my bow hoist as well.

The gri gri plus is designed similarly in operation but not exactly the same. It has the panic braking assist, so if you pull the release lever too hard, or if you let it go while descending it will brake for you. It drops if unweighted but holds if weighted (as long as you aren’t pulling the release lever. Your body weight causes it to pull down and lock until the lever is released or the weight is removed. Basically it’s a self breaking descender.

I caught what you were asking with the spring, from madrock’s site, it says it locks down with very little force (the gri gri requires a little force as well) implying that some force is required to keep it tensioned. 52DBEB12-5CE0-40B5-B41C-E7F98AA9F82B.jpegMy buddy Mark brought his one stick and rappelling set up over so we could find potential slack or failure points and minimize them. He’s very detailed and organized in his climbing and hunting set up. I had never used a kong duck before that day.And the kong made me love my ropeman even more. Anyway we were chatting about the safeguard and he placed it on his Oplux and left it slacked. We watched it very slowly crawl itself down.Since 8mm oplux is out of spec for the safeguard, I wonder if it would do the same on 9 or 10mm htp? However all these ascenders are designed as belay devices and require some form of tension to firmly hold their position on the rope.
