Recently bought all the stuff for SRT climbing. When I bought the 9mm HTP, I had intentions of splicing it. Well, hindsight being 20/20, I've since learned that it can't be easily spliced. Eventually, I will send it off to have an eye sewn into it (Viking/Grizzly splice), but with Ohio's rut being so close, I'm not shipping it off right now. What knot should I use to make an eye in one end of it that will be used to girth hitch around a branch or crotch? I'm no Eagle Scout, and being that I have enjoyed the privilege of walking during these past 34 years, I'd rather not just wing it.

I use a figure 8 on a bight, I would be interested to hear if anyone has something better. The knot is a little bulky, but if you are using the techniques described on this site then mostly the tag end is the only part going up and over limbs. But I’ve only started using srt this season, so... hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

You’re main options are going to be the fig8 on a bight or overhand on a bight. I recommend the fig8 as it will be easier to undo after load is placed on it.

Leave enough tail to add a stopper knot to keep the knot from untying itself. Unlikely but good to be safe. You can also tie a fisherman’s knot instead of the stopper.

Make sure the fig8 is dressed properly and looks like the pretty knot it is.

Practice these knots often to get them ingrained.

Fig 8 on a bight w/ a stopper and plenty of tail. Especially on a stiff rope like htp. Pay close attention to dressing, setting, and keeping it dressed. The stiffness makes it easy to untie knots...which is useful as long as you make sure your knots are in good shape when using them.
