Amsteel questions

I'm a new guy here I know people use amsteel daisy chains for tether but can you use amsteel with a prussic for tether or would it be too slippery

i would atleast try it alot at ground level but just be safe buddy a few ounces isnt worylth getting hurt are loosing your life ...if you are wanting to go light i would stick with 8mm are some webbing

I asked that question last year.
The Amsteel gurus chimed in and said Amsteel is not advised for a tether. I took their advice and didn't try it.

Do not try it!!!! and just because it may hold at ground level under your weight doesn’t mean it will function properly in any sort of fall

Amsteel IMO "crushes" to much to be really effective with a friction grab. I personally would not go that route and I will admit I have never tried it. IMO the rope needs to have a certain rigidity to it for a friction knot grab like a prussic to be most effective. I love Amsteel but this is not one area I see it as a viable option.

Very few, only one person that I can recall, uses Amsteel for a tether. Amsteel is not recommended for a tether because it does not handle shock loads well. Not that your tether should ever get shocked but why take that chance?

The other point, as has been mentioned, amsteel is not recommended for knots. Too slippery, if I understood correctly.

I’ve used 1/4” amsteel as my tether and 3/16” for my prusik for the last 8 years with no issue and prefer it to the commercially made tethers and lineman belts. It’s weight to strength is 2nd to none as well as it’s packability. As with anything to each their own...is the risk worth the reward.

I use a mantis which has an amsteel bridge...

I also hunted out of a saddle 10 years ago when many thought that was crazy and unsafe because it was unfamiliar to what was commercially available.

I use a 3/16” prusik on 1/4” tether and it bites very well....maybe that’s because I’m 250 lbs...?
