Amsteel Second Lineman for Branches Using Utilibridge Concept

That is what I'm guessing will happen. You could put a small chunk of tubular webbing over it to protect it.

I'm still on the fence though. It's about the same size as oplux ropes minus the knots. The knots aren't even that big and you don't have to worry about it snagging.

Amsteel lineman and tether is a cool idea. I just don't think the compactness/ whatever, if any weight savings outweighs the potential lack of durability. Only time will tell though.....
Yes. I think someone had posted a few weeks ago about using the tubular protector which comes with the Harbor Freight winch rope kit. If doing that, it seems like people are creating their own version of Oplux rope, a UHMPE core with a protective sheath. Easier to buy the Oplux rope, IMHO. Or just use rope. Back to square one. :D

Don't all the tiny fibers in Amsteel catch on the trunk and make a fuzzy mess after a short time?

I have a hunting partner who’s been using the same amsteel tether for a decade. He hunts out of a stand. The tether is worn a bit fuzzy, but It is nowhere as bad as you might expect.

I wouldn’t be concerned with this as a failure mode for these purposes. If you are, swap it every couple/few years - which we should probably be doing anyway. Dirt cheap.

Maybe fuzzing while I climb up it with an ascender is not such a concern. Project back on. ;)

That's what I'm thinking. Now if a guys could sew his own eye into the oplux.....

Mine hasn’t fuzzed your that bad. The color does fade quickly, though.
As far as comparing to Oplux, I see a couple of advantages being easily spliceable, lighter and dries out much faster.
Bulk is about the same. Not sure about using an ascender or rapelling, though. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but I’m not going to be the guinea pig.

The amsteel I use on my sticks is fuzzed up....once I untie the versa button the stick will hang off the tree just by the amsteel fuzz. If I was attempting this there would definitely have to be a protective sleeve.....

The initial intent is to use the amsteel as a secondary lineman for going around branches, so I think the wear and tear would not be as fast in the secondary lineman since you aren’t flipping it to climb and will use it less. Primary lineman I still plan to use either my climbing rope with a ropeman or I might try oplux with a kong duck or rollNlock.

Going around limbs is the most precarious party of the climb IMO....I want my gear to work with me not against.

What do you mean working against? Do you think the fuzz would hinder the functionality? I thought you meant that the fuzz indicates abrasion damage that could be a safety concern.

Fuzzy Amsteel would not slip down to your knees like most linesman belts. How do I make fuzzy Amsteel? :D
